It might sound nuts, but the roasted chicken is almost perfect. It seems preposterous, but it is perfect. If that isn't your thing, Sue Zemanick is a wizard with seafood. It has been the most consistently great restaurant in the South for the last 30 years.
ETA: It has been the only restaurant that has produced 3 Food and Wine top ten new chefs along with one in NYC. Plus, a James Beard Award winner in John Currence who was a sous chef there. It is an amazing place. No sign, in an old pharmacy that was owned by a friend's family. Originally owned by the Russell family and the patriarch was my grandmother's doctor.

It is perfect. Chicken, hericot vert, garlic mashed potatoes and mushrooms. It is hard to express how good it is. Just don't overlook any seafood special, because it could blow your mind.

Def go with the fish special...they may even have two to choose from.
Last time we went, someone at our table got the short rib which was delicious too.
For appetizers: we got sweetbreads, duck confit, and scallops and one other that was a special (I forget)

Best way to do Gautreau's...you can basically sample everything.

I've been probably a dozen times and I can say ten of those has been the roasted chicken. It is truly that perfect and good.
A friend is a coach at Newman (not football) and I was sitting in there one night when he walked in with a group of friends during halftime of the football game, had a bottle of wine and appetizers and back for the second half. They keep a table empty for just that. Pretty cool.
A perfect roasted chicken is one of gods special gifts and as basic as it is, probably one of the most eloquent dishes and very few people can do it right. Gautreau's is one. Me another but I've been working on it for 40 years.

There's usually a foie gras app and it's been delicious when I've had it. The fish dishes are excellent. If there's halibut on the menu, take advantage of it if you don't get the chicken. I'm not a big chicken fan, but one day I'll try that roasted chicken since it gets so much praise. I have a difficult time staying away from seafood, though. The banana split is delicious and a fun dessert to get. Too much for one person or for me, anyway. We order several desserts and pass them around. Enjoy!
