I'm sure there was gambling as pretty much any barroom in that era had it but the old "it was owned by Italians so it was run by the mob" mindset is based on people watching too much tv, more specifically watching The Godfather.
This is Baton Rouge in the 40's which was pretty country. Not Canal Street which might as well have been an ocean apart. Baton Rouge never had much, and I say not much because I'm sure some was here but not much mob activity or influence ever. Politically only in regards to New Orleans. Baton Rouge even today is country as I'm sure you've known by this board. I ate a lot of meals in Miss Fannie's kitchen at the Village and while her husband was a very well known gambler-which is how she got started- her and they were far from " mobbed " up.

As I said above - this is Baton Rouge, not New Orleans. It might have a bit of debauchery simply because it is the capital city and draws statewide politicians but that is minimal and this town is much more conservative than most think and only put up with a limited amount of such. This board will tell you how dull this place is and they for the most part are correct. It is vanilla vile and has always been. It is a very conservative and wealthy city that is slow to change even now. And while some look at that as a detriment some look at is as a way of life. Baton Rouge has been run by WASP old money for 100 years or so and still is.

Pastime pizza has sucked for decades now, cardboard crust and skimpy on the proteins, cheap ingredients.
FDL is overrated, but do enjoy the rare occasion for an half ATW/half Veggie + Canadian bacon.
I've enjoyed Led Zep's pies since they opened in BR.

Best pizza in town and not even on the menu. I pulled my 1970 Cutlass in the parking lot one night, hit a pothole and put a hole in the gas tank. No shite. Called Goodwood Mobil and they towed it to Coleman Olsmobile. They paid for the tow and repair, bought dinner for me and my date then gave us a ride home which was a bit awkward. But they always took care of me after that, free appetizer, couple of glasses of wine, just something easy and I always appreciated that. Plus the food was phenomenal. I miss that place more than any other restaurant in this city.

FdL's recipes are unique, that's for sure. It's a different take on pizza that I enjoy maybe once a quarter. I def couldn't eat it on a weekly basis.
I've had my share of run-ins with the staff. Their errors always seem to be the fault of the customer ("If you got the wrong pizza it's because you didn't give us your full name on the order. Not my fault two people with your first name called in at the same time.")
I do enjoy watching them go off on unsuspecting new customers. One stereotypical Baton Rouge uppercrust silver haired matron walked up to that little window and informed the woman taking orders that she was to call her cell phone when her pizza was ready, as she would be sitting in her Mercedes with the air conditioning on. The Fleur de Lis person barked at her, "Lady, when your pizza's ready I'm gonna shout your name twice. TWICE. If you don't hear it then that's your problem."

Martini, my recollection of FDL's "glory days" are similar to yours. shite, when I was in laws school it was a ritual to go on a Tuesday or Thursday and spend hours playing pinball (great machines at the time), drinking beer and eating pizza. I did like the pizza.
The place was never "mobbed up". Joe and Junior did take a little sports action, but no big deal.
