Do you use it for espresso or regular coffee? Looking for something different.

It's my weekend coffee maker.

Usually espresso, but I have used it with coffee.

FWIW Krups makes an auto-moka brewer

I used one for a year or so, it makes a nice pot of coffee.

Looks cool too

It’s finicky, it’s much easier to get a predictable outcome with a French press.

Do you boil the water separately?

I tried boiling the water before assembling to pot and cold water. My experience is when it right it makes really good coffe, but most of the time it comes out wrong. And when it’s wrong it’s undrinkable.

I sometimes do. I use hot water in the water chamber and use a low flame to brew the coffee. Once I get a flow of coffee, I wrap a wet dish towel around the water chamber to stop the boiling of the water. Also, Illy makes a coffee ground especially for moka pots. This is how the old school Italians I knew often made their coffee. No fancy espresso machines!

It requires coffee ground for a moka pot—espresso is too fine, regular drip too coarse. Works best somewhere in between. I boil the water in a kettle before adding it to the pot. It can be messy to load and clean if you’re a fumble fingers, but I really like the body of moka pot coffee. It’s just a tiny bit sludgy, in a good way.

I have the 9 cup Bialetti, I like it so much I travel with it. I grind enough every time to fill the strainer, fill the bottom with hot tap water, set in on my ceramic cooktop at med-hi, set timer for 8 minutes, perfect every time.

I've never had better coffee from a French press, a drip or a $2000 espresso machine.

I think I paid $35 on amazon for it.

How much regular coffee does the 9 cup make? I know that's based on an espresso cup.

A 'cup' is 2 oz,, so 19 oz, 2 full coffee cups.

I set my grinder about half between espresso and regular.

Yes, 2 nice full cups. When we have company we use small 6 oz cups, I have a milk frother, so I spoon the froth on top for cappuccino. I get 4 cups that way. If I had to buy again I might get the 12 cup pot.
