Anyone have any experience with a specialized pickling jar?

I've been into making kimchi lately and was shopping Amazon for some pickling jars with a device on top which allows gasses to escape but lets nothing in.

I've heard pros and cons about these things. Anyone know how important or useful they are? I just don't want to drop $30 for something unnecessary.

Here's an example of one I found on Amazon...

Worth it? Yea? Nay?

$30? Nope.

Drill a hole in a mason jar lid, then buy a rubber grommet and airlock for a grand total of about a buck fifty and go from there.

If I were buying a pickling jar, I'd probably rather have the stoneware crock kind rather than a plastic doohicky. But the heavy pickling crocks are substantially more expensive than the plastic thingy.

I wouldn't even consider making kimchi in a plastic container.

Somewhere in Colorado that device is being repurposed.

Just about to say that for $30, that's a cheap bong!

The pic you posted looks plastic, hence my comment.

Buy the airlock and grommet and DIY like others have said. Also, that airlock is missing it's cap to keep shite from falling in.

LINK

3 airlocks for five bucks. Amazon Prime eligible. Don't tell CAD. You drill your own hole and supply your own grommet or stopper.
