I’m in the market for a dedicated smoker. I’m torn between a few. I like the idea of babysitting an offset, and it seems like these are the best under $1000.

Anyone have one and can offer any reviews? I like the Pecos, Wrangler, and Smokehouse. Thank you

Edit: I’m also interested in the WSM for ease or maybe a kamado to pull double duty. But I love the all-wood aspect of the offset.

I just bought the Brazos (thicker metal but otherwise same as the Pecos in size, etc.) and love it. Chicken and brisket came out wonderful. It holds heat well and is built like a tank.

My only complaints are easily fixable. #1 is that it leaks a lot of smoke. Need to use some of the gasket they make to go around the door. #2 is that it comes with this heat deflector plate that directs all the smoke and heat to the bottom instead of over/around the food. It gets to a point where the end by the exhaust is actually hotter than the end by the fire. I may end up taking it out but my temporary fix is to put a water pan in front of it.

ETA: It is HEAVY. I believe it weighs close to 500 pounds. Don’t expect to just easily pick it up and take it home . The others are lighter but this is probably still an issue.

First thing I did to mine, helps quite a bit. It’s very easy, there’s only two tack welds holding it.

The custom built smokers that are really built like tanks do not leak any smoke whatsoever. Old Country seems great for the price point. Also, you can rent a Uhaul utility trailer with a ramp for only $30 per day for those heavy smokers and not have to worry about the weight.

I have one of the Gravity Fed Smoker and it's treated me great. I've heard the quality of the gravity fed is hit or miss because they wanted to keep it a low price to sell at academy, and I must've got a good one.

But I've heard only good things about the Pecos. Try joining one of the Old Country facebook groups. You can get a lot of insight from actual owners.

I have one of the gravity feed Old Country's, I can't speak on the offsets but the quality on my unit is great. For the price, I could not justify paying 2x more for another brand when the OC is just as heavily built, with the same features. I've read some units though can be hit or miss, I encourage you to inspect the one you are buying carefully.
