Anybody start their tomato plants (from seed) yet?

I'll probably start growing some in the next week or so.
Probably do Creole and some other bush type. Last year I did several heirloom tomatoes, but I will keep it simple this year by only doing three or four varieties.

I'm eating tomatoes I harvested green about a month ago. Set them on the window still to ripen. I also dug up 2 small volunteer tomato plants I have under a grow light.

Started my peppers two weeks ago... They take longer to germinate. Tomatoes in the next couple of weeks.

When I used a heat mat, peppers took five days and tomatoes took three. I think I kept the light (a 100 watt compact fluorescent lamp) on for 48 hours straight once they broke the surface, to prevent them from becoming spindly or leggy.

What are the best varieties to grow along the gulf coast? Maybe the wrong board to ask, but I finally moved somewhere I can grow them and I prefer to grow varieties that are not readily available in stores like Heirloom, but would like to find ones that grow and produce well too.

Good question. Heirlooms do not produce well for me, and they die off with the heat. I'm just over an hour from the coast, so you'll likely have a similar experience with the heat.
Paul Robeson and Cherokee Purple have been the best in my garden.
My favorite hybrid is a better boy - that's what l grew up with. Some people like big boy and big beef, and you'll always have people who are fans of Creole.
If you're just starting out, seeds are cheap online. I order from

Lot of other sources out there.
Some good info on this forum if you want to go down the rabbit hole

You can always find someone who will share seeds if you want to give it a try.
