Just assembled the 1050 and got it fired up for burn in. The littler holder for starter stuff kinda sucks especially if you get a piece of charcoal protruding.

I use to just take a piece of newspaper or paper towel and spray down with cooking oil to start, however not a whole lot of surface area here.

Is everyone just using starter twine or cubes these days?

I bought a big starter brick for like $1 and just cut a chunk off.

I used to use the tumbleweeds but they are too big. I use a starter block now. Found these in my grocery store and they fit perfect

Paradox, take a look at a site - amazing ribs.com - on their review of the Masterbilt. I believe I recall they initially liked this unit but, encountered a couple of big problems with use.

If correct, maybe you can return/exchange if you see merit to their points.

Has been debunked several times.

Appreciate the heads up, but I went into this purchase knowing the issues people have discussed. That being said the issues seem fixable, and you are not finding a gravity feed at this price anytime soon.

Anyone else using lava lock or something like that to seal up the charcoal chamber lid a little better?

Notice that some smoke is getting out there, probably making it difficult to actually put it out quickly even when the baffles are installed.

I use a mapp torch.

Just light it & balance it to where it is hitting the middle of the charcoal hopper, then wait about a minute or two & remove it. Close the ash pan door & put a small weight on the hopper door fan cutoff with the hopper door open. Close the hopper door once I see smoke (another minute or two).

Need to try this. Last several cooks it didn't light the first time i closed the hopper and ash bin doors.

I use a hide-a-key because the magnets ensure it won't fall off.

You could easily by pass the switches but I don't think you'd want that fan on if you opened the doors with that thing rolling around 700°F...

Any users out there getting rust speckles on the stainless.

I've removed them twice, once with vinegar and a second time with ammonia but they're still coming back in certain areas.

Will keep an eye out for it.

I got everything closed back up, but it does seem like it is not quite airtight to actually choke out the charcoal very quickly. Long cool down times. Might need to seal up the charcoal chamber

I dump the ash bucket when I'm done cooking in a metal bucket, it speeds up the cool down process. I also have one of these(upside down from pic) that I put in and put the wood on. It keeps the wood from smoldering out in the ash bucket and you will get a more pronounced smoke flavor.

Sorry I didn't put a link, It's an Ikea stainless steel dish holder out of all things. I got it off Amazon.
