I think I am going to stay away for a bit and let the service shake out. How does the place compare with Mestizo? I dislike Mestizo mainly cause of the velveeta like cheese they slap on things.

I haven't been to Mestizo in years, so I can't offer a fair comparison. Interestingly enough, my waiter (Stephen) was on his first day at Coyote Blues. He did a bang-up job, which warranted my mentioning of what percent tip was left for him as a testament to the service.

In all fairness, they weren't slammed at the time. The food was great, just ask to sit in Stephen's section

I understand the logic, but if everyone did that it wouldn't be open 6 months later.

Come on Early, I saw you at serranos last week for the .99 cent Margarita mondays! I love Serranos. They are 1 of only a couple of Mexican restaurant that started in Baton Rouge, support local children's charities, and help Baton Rouge. Support the Locals and keep the cash here dude! Lata......

That doesn't change the fact that the food there is sub-par.

This guy got a lot of flack in another thread for spamming Serrano's, he's either one of the owners or one of the managers.

They are one step below taco bell. Serrano's has become inedible.

I neither work there, nor do I own it, (I wish). Actually, I sell medical equipment. You are entitled to your opinion, and I respect that, I just look for places that are original and have started new ideas, and Serranos has done that for 10 years. They were the first restaurant in baton rouge to sell fish tacos, mojitos, offer tons of tequila to choose from and on and on....

Heck, go look at Coyotes Blues. Where do you think they copied the Verde Rice from, the tequila list, the look and design of the building (go look at Serranos Lafayette and you will see that answer), the "Cuban Steak", white cheese queso, quail, crab cakes, corn and poblano soup, fried oysters, etc, etc, etc.

I just think people need to understand what they are saying before they speak. Unfortunately, you have former employees on here that may have gotten fired or quit and think it is funny to bash people. Plus, I just enjoy supporting the local neighborhood and charities.

I like Serano's and I like Coyote Blues.

Coyote Blues' service SUCKED last night though. Party of two at 7:40 on a Sunday. It wasn't that crowded and it took 10 minutes to get some water and menus on the table. My only problem there was that we saw our eventual waitress several times and she walked by without a nice "hey, be with you in a minute." I understand being busy, but don't ignore your table like that.

I'll go again because the food was pretty solid, but they are proud of some of those menu items. Unless you and your date are huge fatasses there's no reason to get fajitas for two - with an order of queso we found the single order was plenty.

In all fairness, an awful lot of people on here have knocked Serrano's, so I wouldn't invest a lot of stock into the "disgruntled employee" theory. If anything, past employees like LSUzombie speak fondly of it.

i worked at serrano's. i wasnt fired. i try not to bash locally owned places. i dont think its the best menu, but their fish tacos are some of the best in BR (because br just lacks in the fish taco department). i also like their brunch. everything else is meh imo.

as many know, i worked there while in college (years ago) and i always liked the food

definitely agree. especially the mahi tacos with fresh avocado. add a side of jicama and orage salad and some verde rice and it is great

i also like their brunch

same here. always got there huevos ranchero and had them add fajita beef to it.

but i ate there probably 6 months ago and the menu was totally changed. a lot of my old favorites weren't there. and it seemed they incread the price slightly while decreasing the portion size

same here. I never pick to go to serrano's tho. typically, i will tag along with a few friends who want to go for brunch. its not quite to the point where I insist on something else (unless i have a hankering for decent fish tacos), but that may be coming soon.

In response to raptor:

My gripe with Serrano's is that they simply don't make the same quality of food that they used to (they did however change the menu for the better though IMO). The problem is not with the menu, but the execution of those things on the menu; and when that is combined with sub par service, it's a lose-lose situation for the customer.

Moreover, Serrano's, at least to me, is not so much a restaurant, but a football afterparty spot that is masquerading as a restaurant. That place makes money hand over fist during football season, so it seems that they don't have to put out stellar quality food in order to stay in business.

These are just my opinions.

you are spot on with your assessment. The reason they make money is the booze they sell. I would not be surprised if its what kept them afloat all year.

I have a feeling that this is the case. I've heard of other restaurants that make such huge profits during football seasons, that they could shut down for the rest of the year and still come out in the black. It's rediculous how much money LSU football generates for businesses!

When I was a waiter, it wasn't uncommon for me to walk out of a game day with $500-800 cash. Usually worked from 930 am to 330 am the next day. Made decent money during the school year.

However, working during the week when school was out, I was lucky to get a table some nights

unfortunately, i started at serrano's in the spring. I only made about 150 on cinco de mayo and I didnt leave until 3 am. They told me that's what game days were like. So, i put my two weeks notice in. I went back to my previous job where i made 150-200 on a friday or saturday <8 hour shift.
