Troof, I found that it is a niche store if anything, it does indeed have its place. Most Saturdays in STL were my bulk shopping days, and it was best for the selection of good cheap wines, and certain cuts of meats. But the other places that I hit up were the Farmers market, the Asian owned seafood store(which had stuff priced so cheaply it was like stealing), WF was to get the best French bread for me and the French wife and a few other items(artisinal cheeses).

Trader Joe's sucks. I went to a couple in NYC and I definitely recommend just going to Whoke Foods.

n my experience it isn't "similar to whole foods"

Less expensive? Sure

But many of these locations are about the size of a fricking convenient store.

Yeah, they have some pretty good stuff. The problem is, their selection is often quite limited.

I will say, almost every grocer will fail when attempting to hold it to the standard of Whole Foods (prices notwithstanding).

Right. If there are a few quick items you need that you know will be there then it's no big deal. I don't know that I'd consider it a competitor to a true supermarket.

I never thought so. Just thought it was a "specialty" type place, with some unique products but definitely not an every day/week type deal.

We just got one here in Louisville but I'm waiting a couple weeks to check it out since it's been overrun with every OMG TRADER JOEZ!!!111!!! soccer mom in a 100 mile radius.

rong. Whole Foods focuses more on fresh produce, meats, seafood, cheeses, bakery items, etc. Trader Joe's is known for it's wide variety of packaged snacks and other foodstuff. They have a ton of brands of various things you've never heard of.

Trader Joe's I'd frequent in chicago had all that (not too sure about fish) and that seemed similar enough for me

probably because they have a lot of variety of snacky type stuff that's easy to pass out to kids.

I thought the hold-up in getting a trader Joe's down here was that they needed their distribution center to be a minimum distance away.

Did they expand distribution centers?

HEB's Central Market and Schnucks are as good as Whole Foods. There are some grocers that can hang with them.

Trader Joe's is not meant to be a competitor of Whole Foods, and it's not a "supermarket", per se. At least that's been my experience with it. It is a great place, priced right, to pick up inexpensive wines and what you might call "specialty items". When we lived in L.A. we'd pick up all sorts of random stuff . . . from their different varieties of olives to unusual snacks/hors d'oeurves to just about anything else. Plus some unusual frozen stuff. Never went there for produce or fresh cut meats.

We enjoyed it.
