Oh, and I forgot Strychnine.

I hope that wasn't meant for me. I have as much gray hair as you, probably. If you have hair.

While I believe the OP should have gotten more gravy and the owner may not be handling this expertly i think anyone that believes this place is going to suffer or close down just don't know what they are talking about.

Don't get your oxygen tank too close to the Pastime fryers, Woodrow Wilson.

Has this board ever shut a restaurant down?
Posted on 7/6/14 at 3:30 pm to Internet Casanova
No, TD discussions aren't going to close down a restaurant. Some folks might choose not to eat at one based on opinions here, but the converse is also true. Many folks try restaurants based on opinions from here and a good many restaurants get some good free advertising from this place. In fact, more often than not, folks talk about places they enjoy than places they didn't or don't enjoy, in my view.
Pastime is an old place with a loyal following and likely much of that following doesn't even read this board. The rest of the customers go there for nostalgic reasons. They ate there when they went to LSU and like to return to old haunts and they will continue to do so. The OP apparently stopped there when going through town to Houston on more than one occasion.
Until the guy posted the novella on FB, making a fool of himself, in my opinion, this thread would have been long buried never to be resurrected again. People who never liked Pastime were never going there and people who liked it would have continued to go regardless of one poster's poor experience. The thread had little power either way.
We have lots of discussions about customer service and server type issues and subjects here. Also, many folks here are in businesses that involve customer service, so those discussions can get pretty heated and serious. When the FB post came to light, it was then that this thread got meaty and, only then. For me, I found it fascinating that a business owner, restaurant or not, would publicly post what he posted. It piqued my curiosity. As I said earlier, it was like watching a train wreck as it happened. Interest was like bottle necking.
I feel sorry for Randy in the sense that he didn't know any better than to post what he posted. While I can understand getting your feelings hurt by negative posts, as a business owner, you can't voice that sort of thing in the open. I also feel sorry that he didn't take the OP's post for whatever it was worth and look into the manner in which his employee spoke to the OP. My radar would have been up immediately and a short reminder training would have taken place pronto had I gotten that sort of complaint, whether valid or not. It's a good reminder to employees about customer service regardless of whether it happened. I do this in my business when I hear a concern from a client. I remind folks that not everyone knows the drill and talking down to them doesn't get or keep business. Watch your tone regardless of how tired you might be or your own personal mood. Leave that crap a the door when work starts. I don't have to single anyone out to remind them about the manner in which I require customers and clients to be treated. I would have used it as a learning experience. I hope Randy will do so eventually, but from his comments, I'm not sure he gets it.
So, a few people thought the roast beef was dry. I'd look into it to make sure we weren't low on the valuable gravy. It's two people's opinions, so it's not monumental unless you make it that way. It's worthy of monitoring, but not worthy of his rant.
The OP posted here and didn't ask for any freebies, so that talk was just ridiculous. Yes, it happens that folks do that, but you have to decide to try and read it and determine the pros and cons of doing so with each individual customer. On the other hand, Randy makes it sound like there aren't any complaints so who knows.
I'd love to know what other businesses are joining in and what they've said to determine what I think about it. I find this behavior so interesting from a general business point of view.
I haven't been to Pastime in years and the chances of my going were slim before this thread. Again, I read it when it was posted and moved on to other threads. Wasn't until the FB post that it got interesting.

All this thread needs now is a pic of the rat munching on a piece of pizza.

I saw what you did in the WFDT. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Posted on 7/6/14 at 4:03 pm to Martini
I don't think anyone here believes that at all.
I think its just amusing watching a business owner act so juvenile.

Nah, if a restaurant was going to close over posts from here, Pinetta's would be done after all the times Martini has talked about swatting the roaches on the wall with a newspaper.
