I dont understand where all of this failure of Morganza is coming from. Morganza is not in danger of failing. If anything orcs could possibly be but I think it would have to be a bigger flood event for that to happen
What's going on is that the Morganza is what's in the news and people are hearing about how the rive could change course. Without mention of ORCS by the majority of media outlets that are doing all the reporting, it's confusing folks.
I knew what the OP meant though.

the tradition of TD posting has commonly been the discussion of far-fetched bullshite scenarios, of which my post is a proud example. Now, if you are a Corps employee who can't be bothered with such drivel, please go back to work.
I agree. These type threads are no different than foreign invaders on US soil, Total economic collapse or is the Taurus Judge the greatest pistol ever developed by man kind. These are hypothetical questions that delve into extreme situations with low probabilities and are here to entertain and consider what life would be like.

Ok point taken, but with an event of this magnitude we should maybe be careful, simply because this has the potential to effect us all here in La and some people are getting info from this board. I feel as a responsible citizen, at this point we should keep info as accurate as possible. Thank you

this kind of sense has no place here

quote:What about 1) failure of the levees in New Orleans in 2005 or 2) near-failure of the ORCS in 1973?
"Failure of Morganza structure" is not even a concept.
Both happened when Mother Nature presented conditions that challenged the engineering work that had been done prior to 1) Katrina and 2) 1973 flooding

No way the river changes course thru the Morganza Structure.
A massive failure of the levee behind the town of Morganza has more chance of happening than a total collapse of the structure itself IMO.

Thinking the Morganza (rather than ORCS)could change the course of the river is like thinking Dumbledore could kick Gandolph's arse, K? It's stupid and uninformed.

Mississippi River, and Hurricane Katrina two different animals.
Plus levees in NOLA different then the morganza spill way, just becuase the levees in New Orleans failed don't mean the morganza will fail.
plus the previous poster said the morganza has been improved in 1973.

At that point I'm looking for an old man on a boat filled with animals.
ha i just pictured an old cajun in an over sized pirogue stuffed with two gators, mudbugs, snakes, blue crabs, hogs, etc and using mosquito as doves.

If the Mississippi diverted to the Atchafalaya
SELA would be gone. NOLA would have beach front property and forty foot sea walls.

Anyone who post in response to this thread that thinks morganza failing will divert the river really needs to stop posting on the flood board because you are of no help for people looking for helpful information. One last time it is the ORCS and not the Morganza spillway that poses a threat for diversion.

maintain a deep draft lake in the old Mississippi channel?
FWIW, the Mississippi is not only important as a navigable deep draft waterway, it is also a source of fresh water for nearly a million people in south LA. A reroute of the river would leave a brackish water bayou inthe old river channel, which would not be a suitable source of drinking water
