a big fear with morganza is just how much the floodway(basin) has changed in the 38 years since it was last opened. ie.. more heavily forested and increased sedimentary deposited - water may not flow through as easily as it is intended. which may/could cause many other problems..
What possible problems are you thinking it could potentially cause? I'm not very familiar with this area besides what I've looked at on the aerials, but I do a lot of modeling of flood events.

1. the overall outflow could be substantially lower and slower than what is needed.
need i say more.

Are you talking about the flow going through the Morganza spillway??

Is the Achafalaya Basin in the morganza path?

Excessive resistance to flow thru the Morganza and Atchafalaya spillways could cause water levels to increase above preductions on the outflow (downstream) side of the Morganza floodway structure. That means the will be less elevation difference between the river side and the spillway side of the structure which means less flow thru the gates. It gets constipated!

you are very wrong
Well I guess we will agree to disagree. I can't feel overly bad for the people affected bc this has all been in the works for almost a century. People should have taken the proper precautions knowing this could happen.

Flooding the Morganza will wipe out about 18,000 acres of crops. If the USDA does not designate the opening of the spillway as a natural disaster then framers are SOL because they can't make a claim on crop insurance.
If you dont open the Morganza and then Baton Rouge and NOLA flood, all those crops dont mean shite....There will be no way to move them up and down the river to the grain elevators

actually agriculture still employs more people in la than tourism and the port combined
Listen dumb arse...if you dont have the river ports of BR and NOLA...there is no use for the farming industry in LA..FACT......the farmers NEED the Miss River....its not the other way around

A slight increase in the WSElev on the downstream side won't have much impact. There will be a lot of flow moving down the morganza spillway at a high velocity. A small increase in roughness won't have much effect on the wselev. There will more than enough total head to move 30%, or whatever their target is. of Morganza's capacity.

Yet the trashy parishes still flood. It's just not as bad. Better open them up and hope the farmers plan for it. People in this state choose to live in some shitty spots
many outside of N.O. would say this about N.O.?
I agree

new orleans needs the rest of the state more than the rest of the state needs new orleans...crops leave farm via truck.... they can truck to other places than the river.. in fact much of la's ag products do not leave via the river now a days.
to say the port and tourism are a larger part of the economy is assinine and ignorant.

Why you hating on N.O.?? Say whatever you want but the port of N.O. is BY FAR the most important part of LA's economy. Its also EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to the rest of the US!!

I'd venture to say at least 48 states in our country grows crops. There's only 1 state with the port of the mississippi.
