Lt. General Russel Honore' just said on CNN that there is a major boil in the levee in Point Coupee parish---near the Morganza Spillway.
He suggested opening the spillway immediately.

Red River gauge was showing 1.49 on the last reading I saw posted (around 11am)

Jindal just said in his press conference that the corp should open Morganza by Saturday night.

a breech south of morganza spillway would be bad news for a bunch of populated areas between the river and the atch basin. better take the pressure off the levees before we get another Katrina.

My brother just crossed the floodway and said he didn't see anything unusual. But there is a bad bend just south of Morganza that has caused levee failure several times in the last hundred years. Always a weak point there. Opening the floodway now may be too late, depending on how bad that situation is getting. Hope this is just more hype and rumor.

i wonder how many of these big boils happen in or near places where the river USED to flow...

Maybe the millions of extra gallons of water could be something?

I don't think that it is that big of a factor.
Its just how the ground was when they placed the levees.

Is your brother's name Stevie Wonder?

A boil is not a breach. If they know about it and can get to it, they will probably be able to stop it. If it is beyond that point, it is already too late, and opening the Spillway will not stop it.
The Corps is sticking to its game plan, despite the enormous pressures being brought to bear. I am not at all a fan of the Corps, but I think they are doing a good job here.

It could be. If the levee were placed an old meander bed, and if the bed ran at a high angle to the line of the levee, the old river bed, which is sandy, could be a route for underground water flows.
