Help for a rookie farker

I'm trying to figure out how to replace someones face with another using GIMP. I know how to physically replace the face itself cutting and pasting.
My 2 questions are: how do I blend the colors to make it look more real, and how to impose the image behind the original image, if one has facial hair to keep the facial hair.
For instance as an example, if I wanted to impose Tim Tebow's face into a Joe Namath photo; in other words put the Namath handlebars and sideburns onto Tebows face, but in the pic with Namath's jersey? I have posted the 2 source pics and my attempt at it.
Would I need to make individual layers for the sideburns and handlebars, and add those onto Tebow's face then insert that into the Namath image and blend the colors from there? That's the approach I took in this. Thanks for any help, tips anyone can provide.

This is what i came up with in about 15 mins.
Here are a few tips:
I copied Tebow face and put on a separate layer.
Scaled to fit
Adjusted levels hue and saturation to match
Erased parts of Tebow face to allow the Namath features to show through.
Blending is achieved by reducing the opacity and flow of the eraser.

you might be able to play around with the skew of Tebow's face to align it better to Namath's facial direction. Set a lower opacity on the eraser edge to fade out the edges of Tebow's face

Thanks. How exactly do I Adjust levels of hue and saturation to match?
For the blending, that's just done on the edges since changing the hue/saturation is what matches the color of the 2 images?

You have to make the images the same scale and just do some blending. The mustache would not fit because they have different size mouths, so I just drew it in

I'm not a GIMP user, so the terms I use are Photoshop, However I'm sure that GIMP has the necessary functions.
To clarify;
Adjust "Levels"
Adjust "Hue"
Adjust "Saturation"
Levels Adjustment is here:
and gives you this box:
where you can move the sliders around to get close to your desired result.
The best results are usually a combination of the 3 adjustments I listed.
Correct, since it is often very difficult to get an exact match, blending the edges is the way to go.

Here is my 2nd attempt. I'm noticing I think I had tebows face a tad too big, blending around the chin isn't that great, and the handlebar cutouts dont look that great.
I found those levels and was able to adjust the colors. I'm assuming that is a skill that comes with alot of practice.
Thanks to the others. I can see by these that I have a LONG way to go, LOL

I try to stay away from levels and hue and saturation adjustments as much as possible when matching tones. These images were very close to begin with (ones a little darker). I use layer masks alot and just change brush size and pressure. I warped Namath's head a little to try and get the perspective better.

Any chance you could quickly explain layer masks? I see the option in GIMP, but have no idea how to use that. Working in blending, but that's tough to get a feel of. Any secrets to blending?

You're best bet is to look for tutorials on youtube then mess around with it. A lot easier than reading explanations, imo.

I use PS CS 5.5 so I am not familiar with gimp. I watched this 3 min tutorial on layer masks. Gimp and PS function the same in this regard from what I gathered while watching. Anyway this tutorial is quick, to the point, and a good place to start for layer masks. Gimp tutorial

I use PS so I'm not fully familiar with GIMP, but I'd take a look at these.
