..control between their draft and the start of the regular season?

Benjamin blows his knee out and his owners are fricked, and then you have guys who run over to their league immediately to grab Funchess.

My leagues typically have all non-drafted players as locked FAs until the week before the start of the season, and waivers are then run based on the reverse of the 1st round draft order.

..having it a first come, first served free-for-all is bush league, and it turns into a who saw what first with guys scurrying off to their league site to grab players before anyone else sees the news.

Ha.

Both are the same guy in this scenario: the guy who drafted Benjamim is whining because the draft was too early and it fricked him, and then he's complaining because some jack-leg ran to the site and claimed Funchess within a minute of the injury.

Everyone knows the rules when signing up for a league. You either chose to play or you chose to not play.

So the worst person is the one who bitches about the rules when they signed up knowing what they were getting into

I haven't drafted in any league yet.

I'm sure there will be other preseason injuries that will unfold the same way as this one.

Injuries are unavoidable. If the replacement of the injured player is that good, then own him already.

Having a waiver system just rewards the tram that drafted last. It doesn't even benefit the guy who lost that player. Seems pointless to me.

Camps are fluid. People win jobs, people get hurt, people get cut then picked up. Having FA open is fun for leagues that draft early.

True but open FA this early only benefits the guy who happens to see the injury first.

Maybe a FAAB running every week during the preseason that's separate from your FAAB regular season $?

I don't understand why people draft before the 3rd preseason game. I get being excited about football and excited about drafting your team, but with camp and all the preseason games, it's too risky.

Like somebody said you know what your getting into when you get into the league. If you think the draft is too early, say something before the draft, not after a top draft pick gets hurt.

That systems benefits the player that pays the most attention

Anything that incentivizes activity from an owner is a good thing

Injuries happen from minicamp until the Super Bowl. Bad luck is bad luck regardless. Part of the strategy should be building a roster deep enough to survive injuries

Sometimes, drafting early is unavoidable due to the schedules of those in the league.

..but compounding an early draft with open FA is a big pile of meh.

Because people play multiple leagues and getting 12 people online together at the same time is difficult due to schedule conflicts.

Drafting early vs. drafting late each have pros and cons as well. More competitive leagues tend to draft earlier IMO because the owners pay attention and don't need to cram. Late drafts have the benefit of more recent info, but injuries can happen literally the second after any pick in any draft.

Olsen is the only legit passing option in that offense now. Don't know whether he is going to get shut down because defenses will know to concentrate on him or he'll explode because he's the only option. I think he has a good year.

Exactly. An injury can happen week 2 of preseason and screw over the guys that draft early. Or they can happen Week 1 and screw over the guys that make fun of people that draft early. Fantasy Sports has a degree of luck to them simple as that. It really doesn't matter when you draft because ALL members of said league draft at the same time so its all equal

Sure, injuries can happen at any time, but I've always felt that a main goal should be to control the things you can control like draft date and waivers. Most of the time, the draft date isn't set until you have the league filled. The best time to draft to avoid preseason injuries is after the 3rd preseason game, but due to schedules of 12 people, that may be impossible. However, some like drafting early because the sleepers they are keying could move up the draft boards the later you are in the preseason.

I try to remove as much randomness and luck as you can from a league like: auctions vs snake drafts, and Top 6/Bottom 6 weekly Wins/Losses removes schedule randomness.

We had a league where one guy, in a 3 team division, 12 team league, finished 5-8, and made the playoffs, because the two other teams in his division were absolute shite. There were non playoff teams, in other divisions, with 8-5 records. Mediocrity and luck should never be rewarded.

Wrong. It's after the 4th. Can't have preseason injuries with no preseason games left.
