I think there's a little more bullshite to auction drafts in FF, but its no doubt a bunch of luck. A typical snake draft takes almost no research. Just show up with a draft sheet you printed 10 minutes before the draft.

at least with an auction, the money you bid can at least prove what you think the certain guy is worth. In the end its a decent measure of how much you know

But even then, all of the draft sheets have a $ value assigned to the player, so you pretty much know what they should be going for.
Sure, they have the same thing in baseball and basketball, but at least in those two sports, there are categories to take into account.
