Gronk vs Antonio Gates PPR -- Starting to second guess

The more I look and think about this pick, the more I'm leaning to Gates (assuming he stays healthy, and JG is already taken). Does anyone think that Gronk can come close to what he did last season? Didn't NE get a new OC, that relies heavily on his WR more than TE? Not to mention Vincent Jackson is gone. Am I the only one who thinks this? Whats your take?

Dafuq?
Gronk is the best TE in the game today.

pretty sure i'm laying it all out there. It's not as farfetched as it sounds either. I think people wrote off Gates, but I could see him having a big season

Graham is, IMO (fantasy wise)

Oh really?
TE 1: 1310 yards, 99 receptions, 11 touchdowns
TE 2: 1327 yards, 90 receptions, 18 touchdowns
Which one would you pick?
But, you can probably pick Gates up a couple rounds later, and you can use that early pick for another position.
ETA: Gates will probably finish top 5 at the position fantasy-wise.

last year is irrelevant NOW. No way Gronk comes close to that. JG has a better chance to repeat his numbers. Again, this is just my opinion. In most of the mocks I;m doing, JG is usually picked before I draft a TE, and I keep picking Gronk. But then I started thinking about realistic numbers between Gates and Gronk. It's not crazy to believe Gates can have a top 2 TE performance, as long as he stays healthy. We all know Rivers likes to throw the ball to him, and without Vincent Jackson in the mix, I would think Rivers looks the TE's way more often than not.

Gates is a good pickup, but there's no way he's gonna touch Gronk's performance. Tom Brady relies on his tight ends way more than Brees does, and Hernandez will not take many snaps unless Gronk gets hurt again.

Last season was the most Brady has ever used his TEs. He's always relied on his WRs in years past. Hernandez held his own last season, even with a healthy Gronk. I think he still finished top 3 or 4 in our league among TEs.
It wasn't but this time last year that Gates was in the same position as JG, and RG. If he makes it out of training camp/preseason uninjured, I think he will have a great start of the season

Pretty good breakdown here.
I don't know where your first round pick is, but a Gates, Davis, or Witten is likely to still be on the board in the 5th round. It might be worth it to pick up a top QB and RB first.

so would Finley and Fred Davis, plenty of good options at TE once again. Hell, you could probably land Finley and Davis later than the 5th round though.

well i'm thinking of going with a different draft strategy this season. If JG is still available in the second round (depending on my draft position) I will grab him. I'm thinking of picking a top 3 QB and then grabbing top TE. If i'm able to get them, I can stock up on RBs and WRs, and play waiver wire for surprise picks. I've been pretty happy with my mock drafts so far.

Yep.
PPR league though, Witten or Gates would probably be the best bet after Gronk and Graham.

A Brady/Brees/Rodgers should always be your first pick if you're within reach. Probably Stafford too. In PPR, Gronk/Graham/or a top wideout should be next priority.

probably so but you never know how your draft will turn out.
Fred Davis played in 12 games last year and still put up a 59-793-3 season. Witten is obviously more dependable, he hasn't missed a game in the last three years. But the wildcard here is RGIII. will he rely on Davis or will he rely on Garcon,Hankerson, or S. Moss more?
Finley did pretty well for himself last year too. Dude posted a 55-767-8 season. Vernon Davis beasted in the playoffs but put up similar numbers to Finley in the regular season. He went for 67-792-6. The 49ers added plenty of WR's, it may cut into to his value.

Right, you have to pay attention to the WR core. It seems like tight ends are the hardest to draft.

You can't count on gates. Injury prone. Even if gronk comes back to earth it's still not close

Would he be your 3rd TE taken? I'm in 8 team league (i know how you feel about that), and if I have a 5-8 draft pick, I'm will probably go Brees, Brady, Rodgers for first pick, and then Graham or Gronk for second pick...assuming they are available. If the top 2 TE are gone, I guess I will go back to best available, but i think 1 is bound to be available in the second round

I'm also curious to see how Hernandez is used...if they truly give him carries at RB in addition to his current role it could be interesting taking him later.

I'm a big fan of Hernandez. If I go the TE route later, I'm definitely going to grab him
