I'm only two episodes in but it seems to take the angle of Johnny being the good guy and frick face larusso being the bad guy

Pretty much what you saw in the trailer -
Down on his luck Johnny reopens Cobra Kai dojo with a high school loser being his first student. Daniel believes Johnny will run Cobra Kai the same way Kreese did, so he tries to stop it before that can happen. Hilarity ensues.
A few subplots going on too other than the dojo as the show goes into Johnny & Daniel's family & personal lives. And the local high school that both Johnny's student plus Daniel's kid attends plays a big setting in everything too.
