Let's say melvin Upton goes to Korea for three years.... you think he would need to go through the draft if he makes his way back to mlb?
Posted on 4/17/17 at 9:46 pm to GynoSandberg
We had plenty of dialogue about this and nobody seemed to bring it up again after I made my comments about it, or at least I don't recall it being brought up again.
The dude was eligible to be picked up since the inaugural draft. Players in this league are eligible to be picked up via free agency once they go through at least one fantasy draft of being eligible to be picked. There is also no rule that says a player is no longer eligible to be picked up once he leaves MLB to play in another league.
It's really the only way to rule on this issue.

There was no sense making a stink of it when, one, its unprecedented in this league and there was no prior planning to make it a rule. Essentially a loophole

While he was in Korea?

In the end, there was no technical rule, which is why it wasn't protested more. The guy isn't a MLB player once he goes to play in another league if you ask me. I'll leave my side of it at that
Again kudos to Papz, wish I would've done it myself. That whole better to ask for forgiveness thing. We can drop it now
Posted on 4/18/17 at 8:12 am to GynoSandberg
I don't think we should drop it. We need to clarify this in the constitution in the event this happens again.
Posted on 4/18/17 at 8:16 am to reddman
I think the precedent has been set now. We all know what to do now if this comes up again.

It needs to be clarified in writing for future instances.
Also, if we want to vote on changing that moving forward, people should speak up now. If Thames' revival is real, we may see more instances of this happening.
If people would prefer that a player that leaves MLB to go to another league must re-enter the draft pool before being re-signed in FSBDL (unless an owner stashes him the entire time), then we need to vote on that.

look...if I want to add Jorge Cantu, I should be able to. I dont need to wait until he comes back to MLB.

Updated two sections of the constitution to clarify the rule:
quote:
C. Rookie/International Draft (beginning in 2016) 1. Draft will be a slow draft consisting of two rounds.
2. Draft order will be the reverse order of finish from the previous regular season. In the event of a tie in the standings, the team that won the H2H matchup the season before will get the higher pick.
3. Draft will be in a straight (non-snake) format.
4. Owners will be on a two hour time limit to make a pick. a) Picks can be made via email/text/FSB thread.
b) The time limit does not apply during the hours of 10pm-7am Central time.
5. Only players that have been signed by a MLB team between the previous year's draft start date and this year's draft start date are eligible.
6. Owners can elect to pass on either/both of their picks.
7. At conclusion of draft, all free agents will be placed on waivers.
8. Starting with the 2018 draft, one additional farm slot will be added for three consecutive years, ending with the 2020 draft. a) Extra slot will be added to teams when that season's draft begins. b) Owners can add players to the new slot via draft picK. c) If an owner doesn't have any draft picks, he can add a player to the new slot once the draft has concluded.
quote:
VI. Free Agency
A. Any player not on a team roster and in the league website’s database is considered a free agent.
1. Players that were drafted by a MLB team during the current season are not eligible to be picked up.
2. International free agents signed by a MLB team during the current season are not eligible to be picked up.
3. Any player that has never been signed by a MLB team in his career before the current season's Rookie/International Draft is not eligible to be picked up.
4. Any player that retires or signs to play with another league is still eligible to be picked up via free agency in the event he unretires or signs with another MLB team.

Those changes address both the Thames situation, as well as closing any loopholes that would allow a player to pick up someone like Otani.

He's still jacking dingers in the Mexican league... comeback is imminent.

Yeh. I'd like so.
I think players that are not with an MLB organization the year prior to our draft date should all go through draft process.
Just my $0.02.

I'm fine either way, but I'd side on adding them to the draft.
Posted on 4/18/17 at 10:02 am to MrWiseGuy
You think the letter of the law is set up to give due process to a guy coming from a foreign league or in the MLB draft, preventing a first come first serve
Writing in these extra rules seems unnecessary if the true intention of the rule is to prevent first come. "Being in the player pool X amount of time" seems a bit arbritary and random all of a sudden

I'm good either way as long as it is clarified and we all know the rule.

Not sure I follow, G. What is it that you are suggesting?

Anytime someone is entering MLB they have to go through the draft. Regardless of if its their first time or not.

If you come from foreign league or through the draft you go through our draft

That's certainly an option for the future.
I don't know how often this scenario will come up, but if a guy like Thames can go to Korea, work on his game, then come back to MLB and be successful, you might see it more often.
