A bet was made in out FFL a few weeks in by two managers. I will try to explain it withou bias:

Owner 1 proposes side wager that "whoever finishes lower in the standings or whoever scores the least points pays the others entry fee next year."

Owner 2 responds "Person with the lower standings end of season pays" as his choice of the two bets

At the completion of week 13, Owner 1 is 7-6 and in wild card and Owner 2 is 10-3 in first with a bye week. Owner 1 wins his game then beats Owner 2 in the semi-final round.

Owner 1 claims he has higher standing for the season for winning the playoff game. Owner 2 states that the season ends week 13 and that he won. Owner 1 says the playoffs count as the season. Owner 2 refers to league sidepot bets "Most points in a week during the season, and most total points in a season" which both end week 13 and a winner is declared. He says that the bet should follow those formats since he had stated "higher standing at the end of the season".

It's a bit complicated, but which if either do you agree with?

Owner 1 lasted the season longer. He wins hands down. Some guys (myself included) do this every year and this is the way we do it. One person will always finish ahead of another when done this way. Whoever stays alive the longest, regardless of record.

Sounds like the some of the wording in the bet was left open to interpretation.

Bet cancelled.

Set more ground rules for side bet next year.

If I had to choose Owner 1 would get my vote though.

With owner 2's language "lower standings end of season", owner 2 loses. Week 13 is not the end of the season.

However, I can make an argument that the intent was to end the bet after week 13. (I'm going to assume ESPN.) ESPN doesn't calculate points in the playoffs, so when you look at standings > total points for, those points are only during the regular season.

I would cancel the bet since there can be multiple interpretations. They should have clarified at the time. No one gets the money.

It should be a no bet since it wasn't specified. Could be season standings or playoff standings. Just 'standings' doesn't say which one it is

I agree with this. But I would vote owner 2.

You should have specified if it was regular season or not. That being said, interpretation of an ambiguity relating to a definition goes to Owner 2 since Owner 1 initiated the bet (at least in contract cases). I would say based on this that Owner 2 is correct.
