are we still fapping to spring dings?

For your reading pleasure? Sure, sounds good to me. My thoughts on the 2014 DAT teams:

1. 31: Drooling over this team. Joey Votto, Paul Goldschmidt, Mike Trout – safe to say he’s going to compete. Then fields it out with some solid veterans in Carlos Beltran, Jayson Werth and Aramis Ramirez. Only question I have is where are the steals going to come from outside of Trout? Will Goldy continue to run? Matt Kemp is the obvious wild card.

The pitching is top heavy, but it’s a really good top heavy. Max Scherzer and Gerrit Cole are the anchors with Matt Moore and hopefully a healthy Cole Hamels rounding out the starters. Jonathan Papelbon should be a steady closer but pitch speed/injury concerns surround Bobby Parnell and who knows what Tommy Hunter will be.

Short term outlook: One of the favorites, bottom line.

Long term outlook: Dude has Mike Trout and Byron Buxton … C’mon, Man!

2. CE: You want power? Jay Bruce and Matt Adams. You want speed? Carlos Gomez and Jacoby Ellsbury. Stability? How about Dustin Pedroia and Freddie Freeman. Those six guys will carry the offense, barring injury, in the hitting categories. Really like Jason Castro and wish he’d get more at-bats. Not a big fan of the rest of the hitters, but as complementary hitters, they should do just fine.
The pitching staff is stacked. I still believe Justin Verlander is a top-10 SP and he’s CE’s NO. 2 behind Yu Darvish. Andrew Cashner is going to be really good and Matt Cain is a quality No. 4. Good enough closers with Joe Nathan and Ernesto Frieri.

Short term outlook: A team I feel is ready to compete right now, barring injury. I worry about Gomez (just getting on-base) and Ellsbury (injury concerns) and if these two aren’t stealing bases, then who is? Overall, still a solid club that should be a contender.

Long term outlook: I believe the pitching to be in good shape with Verlander, Darvish and either Cain or Cashner. The hitters is a different story. Lots of down the line concern with many guys outside of Freeman and Bruce.

3. FratDaddy: Unquestionably, the most power in the league. Evan Longoria, Carlos Gonzalez, Troy Tulowitzki, David Ortiz, Jose Bautista and Giancarlo Stanton. Yet there all of these players have missed serious time in recent seasons, so that’s the cause for concern. Has little speed.

The pitching staff is nothing to write home about, especially with Aroldis Chapman out about 1 ½ months. With Frat, you understand his strategy. He likes his closers and the K/9 and punts QS’s. Although it may be a little more difficult early on for him to win those ratio categories with no Chapman.

Short term outlook: As long as his squad stays healthy, he’s a lock for the playoffs.

Long term outlook: CarGo, Tulo and Longo – at one point, the Rockies had the opportunity to have these three but drafted Greg Reynolds over Longo … Frat also has Bogaerts coming up with two young dominant closers in Kenley Jansen and Chapman.

4. Thomas: One word, power. Has four players that conceivably smash 30 home runs (Wilin Rosario, Edwin Encarnacion, Mark Trumbo and Pedro Alvarez). I have to think that Alfonso Soriano power eventually dissipates, but another candidate for 30+ long balls. Then has speed in Jean Segura and Billy Hamilton; I’m not big on Brett Gardner as I feel he’s kind of lost some of his base-stealing prowess. Alejandro De Aza provides some pop and a little speed, Torri Hunter should provide RBIs and Rs, and Todd Frazier has some power. I’m not a big fan of Brandon Phillips, but for what Thomas is going to need from him, he’s a perfect fit.

The pitching staff is littered with high K/9 arms. Anibal Sanchez provides some stability to Gio Gonzalez’s and John Axford’s likely high WHIP’s.

Short term outlook: A team that will compete this year, undoubtedly.

Long term outlook: Thomas’ squad is full of veteran players, but none of his keepers are on the decline and I love Noah Syndergard, good scoop up there. Only complaint, not a lot of high OPS hitters to lean on in the future.

5. Barry: I feel like this team is missing a building block hitter. Yasiel Puig obviously has as much potential as anyone, but I’m terrified of him. I love Ian Desmond and Alex Rios, but what he gets out of Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols and Curtis Granderson will ultimately define how far his team can go.

Another good staff, seems to be a pattern. Clayton Kershaw is Clayton Kershaw, but Cliff Lee as a No. 2 and Homer Bailey as a No.3 are really good as well. Will compete in saves with Huston Street and Casey Jansen as well.

Short term outlook: I think he needs Pujols and Hamilton to perform well to be a serious contender. The pitching will get him to the playoffs, but not sure the bats are good enough for him to do damage once he gets there.

Long term outlook: A bit of a concern outside of Kershaw, Desmond and Rios. Everyone else seems to be on the wrong side of 30.

6. Honkus: A solid all-around hitting team. Jason Kipnis is awesome. Adrian Beltre, Brandon Moss and Chris Davis provide the thump, with Everth Cabrera getting the stolen bases. George Springer is the wildcard here, if he provides the base stealing/power hitting that he has thus far displayed in the minors, then Honk could potentially have one of the best lineups come playoff time.

The pitching is good enough. David Price is a fringe top-10 starter, James Shields was great last season and will pile up the K’s and Hyun Jin-Ryu is an underrated starter and a terrific No. 3 starter. He’s got two solid closers as well.

Short term outlook: I think Honk’s going to have to pay attention to the waiver wire and make a key pick up. His team is close, but could be a bystander when playoff time comes if he’s not active on the waiver wire.

Long term outlook: With Davis, Kipnis, Price and Ryu, Honk is in good hands for future seasons.

7. Papz: Holy BATS, PAPZ! Papz has a typical Papzy team, loaded with bats. Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Robinson Cano! Love the surrounding pieces with Matt Holliday, Kyle Seager and Starling Marte. If Nelson Cruz or Chase Headley play up to their potential, Papz has one of the most formidable lineups in the league.

I understand the strategy that Papz implores, but he doesn’t have that anchor at the top of the rotation to make it work this season. Hisashi Iwakuma, Johnny Cueto, Scott Kazmir, Yovani Gallardo just don’t give me a comforting feeling. I do like Alex Wood, though.

Short term outlook: Oh, if only Matt Harvey were healthy. The bats are there, but I question the staff.

Long term outlook: 2015 Papz could crush this league if Harvey returns to 2013 form and Cano and Prince can continue their elite level production for one more season.

8. MSU: He’s got some pop with Buster Posey, Domonic Brown, Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper. He’s got some speed with Elvis Andrus and Jose Altuve. Then he’s got some solid all-around guys with Shin-Soo Choo and Alex Gordon. It’s not bad, but is it enough?

The pitching staff looks really good especially at the top. Stephen Strasburg may be in line to take that next step in his career. Felix Hernandez is just awesome. Madison Bumgarner is a dominant No. 3. He’ll break camp with two solid closers on good teams.

Short term outlook: I don’t think there are enough complimentary hitters on this team. It would be intriguing if he put Hernandez or Bumgarner on the block for a bat – oh wait, didn’t he trade Stanton for Hernandez? Don’t get that if you’re keeping Archie Bradley.

Long term outlook: Love it. Strasburg, Hernandez, Bumgarner, Bradley, Harper, Posey … I really want him to trade one of those SPs for a bat.

9. Louie T: Adam Jones, Andrew McCutchen and Ryan Braun headline the hitters … stop drooling. Has some good complimentary hitters with Eric Hosmer, Jose Abreu, Victor Martinez and Carlos Santana. Solid group of hitters.

I just flat out don’t like the arms. He’s got a couple of good closers (David Robertson and Greg Holland) but in an era full of quality pitching, Louie has very little. Sure Danny Salazar and Zach Wheeler have loads of potential, but I think he’d even admit he’d prefer a little more
certainty out of the starters.

Short term outlook: The hitting is there, but will Salazar or Wheeler take the step to be able push Louie into playoff contention? Zack Greinke is terrific, but Louie needs a No. 2

Long term outlook: All the bats are young and so is the pitching, but again, I think it comes down to Wheeler or Salazar making a case for top-25 starting pitcher status.

10. JewT: Nothing gets me really excited about this team. I think Ian Kinsler takes a step back in Detroit, maybe not in runs scored but in all other categories. Yadier Molina, Josh Donaldson and Adrian Gonzalez are steady performers, but not catalysts. Who knows how many games Jose Reyes will play. Wil Myers should prove to be a 30+ home run guy.

Pretty good staff here. Jered Weaver, Sonny Gray, Michael Wacha and Adam Wainwright. Fernando Rodney is scary as he could lose WHIP for you all by himself in any given week.

Short term outlook: Everyone obviously has their own opinions, but I just don’t see how this team competes this season. It’s got a pretty good starting staff, but the bats are a cause for concern.

Long term outlook: I like the future of this team with Wacha and Myers being young players on the rise and some steady vets surrounding them. I wish he had one more top-tier veteran bat, though.

11. Pappagiorgio: I think Papps will be relying on too many unproven youngsters. All have really good upside and I could look foolish in just the first two months with this ranking. But I don’t see that one dominant high OPS guy right now. Papps definitely needs Hanley Ramirez to perform close to how he did in 2013 – as an MVP candidate.

Tons of HIGH K/9 guys, taking a page out of Frat’s playbook. I like this staff he’s built and if the bats come around then he’ll be a playoff contender with this group of starters.

Short term outlook: As I said earlier, the young guys need to outperform their age for him to be a playoff contender.

Long term outlook: He has a plethora of young, highly regarded players. Javier Baez is going to be great to pair with Machado – although, in a few years it may be Baez at third and Machado at short. Let me get Yordano?

12. MrWiseGuy: Where’s the power? I don’t see one legitimate 30 home run player in the everyday lineup. I’m a big fan of Nick Swisher and David Wright, but what will he get out of Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes? Good speed with Villar, I like this guy a lot from a fantasy standpoint. This team desperately needs for either Michael Morse or Josh Willingham to return to their 30 home run potential and that’s not good to rely on those two.

Love the starting pitchers. I feel like there are three top-20 starters (Masashiro Tanaka, Shelby Miller and BPiB) and then you have Taijuan Walker as well. Chris Archer is an intriguing late-round pickup as well. The relief pitchers suck.

Short term outlook: A lot has to go right for this team to compete this season, but I could see it finishing as high as seventh if some of the younger guys get the call up early, which is a decent possibility.

Long term outlook: As high as MWG is on Oscar Taveras, he is just as excited about Gregory Polanco. Polanco stole 38 bases at 6-foot-4 220 pounds, while also pounding out 12 home runs. A guy who was moved from off the mound to a position player showed his upside in Winter Ball where he posted a .922 OPS – the only player to post a .900 OPS – while taking home MVP and ROY honors. Lots of high level youngsters on this squad.

Good job. Exactly where I have myself pinned. 31 has to be the consensus top team as well.

The more I look at Thomas' team, though I have him at 4 as well, he has great balance and could arguably be the second best team. Props to you T. I didn't think your team looked all that great coming into the off season... but you did a hell of a job making trades improving your keeper set.

Thanks for the rankings.

Not terribly worried about my pitching after making the move for Teheran. I was before that, though. Between Greinke, Teheran, Salazar, Wheeler, Liriano, & Pineda I should get 3 pretty good ones.

Getting rid of Miggy put me in a hole in the power department. Hopefully adding a masher SS in JJ Hardy can make up for it (especially if I get a healthy Teix to add another 30). If Matt Adams gets platooned often I feel im gonna struggle with HRs and RBIs each week.

Would never imagine myself ranked at #2 but ill take it

you agree with how they fell out?

MWG hit on all the bottom 6-7 teams, but the top looks pretty different
