I voted for Johnson and I think he is a terrible candidate. What I really voted for was to see a 3rd party get maybe 10% of the vote to increase their chances in the future. That's why I don't view it as a wasted vote.

Not very happy with Johnson; however, I am voting for Johnson to get him to 5%. This will give the Libertarian party public funding as well as other benefits.
Looks like Trump will dominate northwest Georgia and southern Tennessee though, which makes me happy.

i voted for GJ in 2012
i supported him this year and then he went off the rails
still voted LP to try to get the 5% threshold
i live in a Trump state and my vote doesn't matter in terms of DEM v. GOP

I respect your opinion Cooter. There's more to him than pot though. GJ wants to rein in spending and fix our interventionalist foreign policy.

what we need is to remove the advantages that parties get in the electoral system across the country
Why does a candidate have to poll at %15 or more to get into a debate?
It's a shitty feedback loop. You don't poll high enough then you can't spread your message, but how do you spread your message when you can't get into a debate.

Holy shite you are so un-informed. The man has great ideas on a lot of things but you got stuck on pot.

yeah that is one thing (although it is technically a private enterprise)
ballot access is another
hell Trump showed what a bunch of free advertising via the media can do. the media coverage of the 2 major parties is potentially the biggest hurdle. however, if there is one institution that left this election cycle with a black eye, it's the national media

Lol but Johnson is a retard.
A retard cannot become a successful two term governor. A retard cannot build one of the largest businesses in his state, on his own, without daddy's millions.
Johnson grew up the very definition of middle class and worked his arse off to build what he has today. Trump had every advantage in the world and millions of dollars from his father.

What he's saying is that if we eliminate it then the amount of illegals would not want to come here.

2 things
1. major parties in the US do change. it hasn't always been DEM and GOP
I didn't say major parties don't change. I was invalidating the concept of 3rd parties.
quote:
2. you can force one of the major parties to change. the DEMs are a perfect example. after the 2010 midterms when they lost a lot of "blue dog" DEMs, they just wrote them off and the more progressive wing of the party took over and that has become their focus
I'm aware you can force a major party to change. I explained that in my previous comment. I don't think voting Gary Johnson this election in any way has that effect. At all. At the same time I'm well aware that many Libertarians don't vote to actually affect anything strategically but rather as some self-righteous act.
quote:
well let's say a mythical small L libertarian wins and works to reduce government. that solves both problems.
I'm sorry, but this is completely delusional. Some Libertarian lite candidate wins a presidential election and meaningfully changes the country? How exactly? All of a sudden millions of 3rd world migrants or generation removed posterity aren't voting for government welfare programs? The Democrat constituency magically collapses? Demographics cease having any relevance? Libertarian ideology will always lose to a big government ideologies willing to utilize power unless you have an entire political entity that embraces Libertarian ideology. Which you will NEVER have. Libertarianism is utopian, plain and simple. That's not to say that it doesn't have important ideas that can be influential in our politics, but as a ruling ideology it's not ever going to happen.
quote:
to what, exactly?
Not to Libertarianism, but as a stalwart against the progressive lurch to the left from the Democrat Party. As an alternative to the lip service, do nothing brand of Republican establishment rule. As an opposition to neoconservative foreign policy. To endless spending on foreign security. To free trade globalism that paired with ridiculous corporate taxation and regulation ensures that American business interests will relocate to foreign nations out of necessity. To halt a perpetual endless flow of 3rd world immigration which continues to fundamentally alter America's domestic politics. Etc.
Again, you may not agree with Trump's platform, but he has given a blueprint for how to fight the orthodoxy and potentially actually WIN in the process.

I don't understand why Trump supporters are so adamant about blowing up the system, but are against someone voting for a third party candidate.
Third parties grow from the local and state ranks. The best way to initiate their growth is by a third party candidate receiving 5% in a general election. Funding, exposure, and ballot access. Johnson voters didn't vote because they thought he could win, they did it to get to 5%.
It's not a wasted vote, especially when this is the first step in blowing up the system you all hate so much.

Aaaaah, gotcha. Yeah I'm tracking. Ching Chong in rural china will get the memo that the USA is no longer spending the same amount on welfare, so he won't smuggle himself across the Mexican border anymore.
Makes total sense, I get it.

Either Trump or Clinton will be president. If you are voting in a battleground close state, your vote for a third party candidate is just like voting for Clinton because you have two true choices. The rest are distractions. Rationalize it all you like, but that's the truth.

All Johnson cares about is pot. He has the mentality of a 16 year old stoner. They asked him for his opinion on the situation in Aleppo and he didn't even know what that was. Congratulations on throwing your vote away on an embarrassing pothead idiot.
*For the record, I have nothing against pot, but a guy that age whose whole existence revolves around it is a loser.
You're just terribly uninformed.
I would bet money that Trump had no idea what Aleppo is before that made news. If you watch his answer afterward, he did very well. My guess is that you didn't listen to the rest of the interview though. That would be took much work.
Things like that are why Trump is a nominee. Idiots in this country want soundbites. They're headline readers who don't bother to do any research on their own. Trump is full of soundbites. Most of them are juvenile and pathetic, but no one cares about that as long as he's stirring up hatred and fear.
