My family migrated to the United States over 20 years ago in search for a better life. Since then, they’ve been working hard to achieve their dreams, to give me a better life than the one they had. I’m proud of my heritage, proud of speaking two languages, proud of being a Colombian-American. My mom has raised me alone since I can remember. I am who I am because of her. She taught me what I know; she taught me my manners; she taught me to be an involved American Citizen. And, I can honestly say that I’ve seen firsthand how women have to work so much more to achieve their goals. I’ve been so proud of our country these last few years. But today, I'm sad. The man my country voted for is a man who insults immigrants, insults women, and insults me. More than that, he insults disabled people, insults Americans who do not look like him, insults the future. I'm not saying this because I'm a proud Democrat and I just wanted a Democrat to be POTUS again. I'm saying this because, despite Hillary’s flaws, which I can admit she has, she cared. She visioned the America our founding fathers would’ve wanted; she visioned inclusiveness. There's a lot more than I want to write, but I can gather my thoughts because all that I feel is sadness. But I will say this, Congratulations Donald Trump, you did it. And along the way, you divided our country. I won't call your Mr. President, but I will give you the respect you lack. To my peers in fear, we have to fight back, get involved because we are the people; we are America. Our stock market might be crashing; our country might be full of hate, but we will, hopefully, survive. January 20th, 2017 will be a scary day, but all we can do from that day forward is hold Donald Trump accountable.
