No chance that is 100% true. Otherwise Roku would not have pulled the current app from their platform. Google gets hurt more because people will cancel YouTube TV.
If it's like the HBO max issue with Roku, they want a cut of the monthly subscription. They won't allow apps on their ecosystem without a cut.
I'm sure that privacy concerns might be part of it. But the reason the app is gone is because of money... It always is

I don't know how price-sensitive these markets are, but I would like to see Roku just raise the prices of their devices by $10 or whatever it needs in order to not need to skim.
Imagine if Hulu or someone decided to join Google and hold out on Roku as well. Roku would be completely fricked.

I've had both roku and nvidia shield (which runs android TV).

It is true, though. Google wants to dictate what Roku has to do with their hardware and OS for both performance (codec requirements) and privacy (google is demanding access to roku search data and preferential treatment for results).
Roku pulled the app because Google doesn't have an agreement with Roku. google doesn't agree to terms so they can't publish.

I'm no google or apple fan boy but the app developer signed the agreement on the 30%. The developer also wouldn't have a platform to make 70% without apple and google. So to call it stealing is absurd.

The developer doesn’t have any choice. They have a monopoly on the ecosystem.
It’s the equivalent of requiring all computer software to be run through Apple’s store to be installed on a Mac or through Microsoft’s store on Windows. No third party allowed. Oh and they are going to skim 30% off the top of every software you download on to your computer. They have the platform right? Something tells me most consumers would have a major problem with that scenario, but it is no different than the smartphone market.
You should never be okay with a monopoly.

I do wish Apple etc. would open up more, but to play devil's advocate, this is roughly equivalent to how software publishing has worked in the videogame console industry since the mid-80s, and most people are fine with accepting that. Although I'm more of a PC gamer myself for this reason.
