Advice Needed: Buying Camp on Tickfaw
We're a family with 3 kids under the age of 10 and seriously looking at camps on an inlet to the Tickfaw River.

How's the fishing? Hunting on Joyce WMA? Also, where is the closest place for my crab traps? Any advice is much appreciated.

The fishing is good on east side of maurepas and in the pass. I’d say heading west down the pass to the big lake you could put a few crab traps.
Hunting is good, but tough as hell. Need to get with a local for deer hunting to learn the landscape.
Plenty of great boat riding on Maurepas and diversion canal. Get a charge acct at Sunbuns lol

Prop Stop

Sorry I could not resist.

I grew up spending time in the summers on the Tickfaw down by Tin Lizzys. I have no advice to the main questions your asking but, I will tell you that those times on the water out there with my dad and other family are some great memories still to this day 30 years later.

Haven't done much hunting down there. My old man had a camp way up river. Always did good bass and perch fishing. Trotlines for catfish was always good. My old man used to put crab traps at the mouth of the tickfaw in Lake Maurepas and we caught plenty of crabs.

Some record Choupique in there too. Good luck with flooding. My pawpaw had a trailer on the canals over by Vacajun marina that was up 5' off the ground and was like half full last flood.

Sounds like someone with experience. I had a camp for about 15 years directly on the river. Sold it 5-6 years ago and still get PTSD when I hear the Killian gauge is over 4.5’. Great times until all your stuff is floating around inside your place.

I have a place in Terry Harbor.

Fishing is not great, but pretty much everything else is.

Usually lots of boats on the river and swimming in the lake is fun. I enjoy riding to Middendorfs for some catfish.

Bottom level floods pretty regularly, so be prepared for that.

The police are ridiculous. They will give you a ticket for going 27 in a 25.

We are looking in Terry Harbor right now. Possibly one of the dockaminiums in Kings Point. Only concern with those is not being able to sell it when the time comes to move on to a camp.

Would I be wrong in thinking that if we built a camp up on pilings on Swamp Drive that unless a crazy large flood came we should be good? I am thinking of doing 3br 2bath camp on pilings with 2 boat slips. If we do that I think that is all we will ever need size wise.

This is the link to the gauge close to Tin Lizzy's.

LINK

It says the record high flood was at 8.16 ft...that was Isaac...In reality it was 2016 and hit a hair over 10 ft by my calculations(and the 16 inches of water in my place). The gauge malfunctioned at some point during the flood in 2016.

Go to your prospective property...look at the water...look at the gauge reading and imagine what the water would be at 10 ft. i.e. If the gauge says 2 feet imagine what it would be 8 ft higher.

Then build higher.

Terry Harbor?

Family has a house there and it's flooded more in the last 5 years than it has since it was built in the 70's.

Thankfully it has just been raised 10' and those flood days are over.

As far as hunting the Joyce WM, I know 2 guys that pretty much have that place figured out and successfully kill quality swamp deer. One has been featured on Louisiana Sportsmen magazine a few times.

I’ve heard stories of catching specks at where the river runs into the lake. Anyone ever do this?

I wouldn’t doubt it.

Been hearing lots of talk about manatee sightings in that area.
The kids were catching blue crabs off of the dock at the house in Terry Harbor with worms in their fishing poles last summer.
