Glad to see that after you said Book 1 didn't do too much for you.

I actually like the 2nd Powder Mage series a lot better so far.

Much better developed characters

Yes. Its another trilogy.

I'm only maybe half way through book 1 but the new characters are far more interesting than almost anyone in original powder mage series, and I like the setting better so far.

I can buy that, I feel like writing well rounded characters people identify with is probably the hardest part for new authors.

It didn’t. It was good enough I didn’t regret putting the time into it but it never really grabbed me. It was sometime around the middle of book 2 that I really got engaged but book 3 has been absolutely phenomenal from start to finish.

ETA: or better to say start to middle as I haven’t finished it yet.

That’s been my main problem throughout the series.

Outside of Taniel, Tanas and to a lesser extent Mihali and Ka’poel I really don’t give shite what happens to any of these people.

But I’m still locked in and on the edge of my seat

That's the main reason I like the second trilogy better than the first. I thought every main POV character was really well done and very interesting in that trilogy. Ben Styke in particular is awesome of the new characters.

And without getting into spoilers I was impressed with how he turned a secondary character I really didn't care for in the first trilogy into an amazing main character in the second trilogy that I really liked. Abercrombie in his sequel novels is the only guy that usually shifts me on characters like that.

I'd agree with Cotton on the first Powder mage, I thought the first solid but not amazing, and it took off in the second book and was really good from there. And I think the second trilogy was great start to finish.

Finishing up Emperor of Thorns now - had a harder time getting into this one. Something with the way it kept shifting viewpoints or timelines like he has done did not work quite as well in this offering as it did in the previous books.

I could see that. I thought he stuck the landing on that book though, it had a fitting finish to the trilogy.

Love Greatcoat, it's gritty fantasy three musketeers goodness. It's similar to powder mage in that the first book is solid and then it really gets going after that.

Castell is a really great under the radar fantasy author. Talking about him reminds me I have the final book of his most recent 6 book series on my Kindle to read.

I finished the first powder mage trilogy yesterday and it was phenomenal. From about halfway into the second book until the end it was damn near all I could think about.

Started second trilogy today and I like it so far. And you’re right Ben Styke is fricking awesome

Finish book 2 of the Expanse series last night. That surprise ending has me wanting to pick up the third book today and start it.

Did you also get some strong Logan Ninefingers vibes from Ben Styke?

It’s all I can think of and I’m loving it

I didn't really make the connection while reading it, but they are both big brutes who are nigh unstoppable up close and one on one. And both are good tacticians despite their brutal natures.

Styke isn't insane with bloodlust quite like Logan though, but then who is.

Who ever suggested Red Rising series, thanks. I chewed through the series in a week. Now I'm left looking for something equally as good.

What kind of stuff do you like? Sci Fi mainly or interested in fantasy?

I can see what yall mean sort of - although I'm only 2/3 of the way through book 1.

I am enjoying the new magic vs. old magic dichotomy thus far though. Will probably try and get through book 1 tonight if I can and do a big chunk of book 2 tomorrow.

I’d recommend Ted Chiang‘s short story collection Exhalation. It’s nine entertaining and thought-provoking stories ranging in length from 4 pages to basically a novella.

It reminds me of a book version of Black Mirror. Although maybe not quite as dark and maybe a bit more philosophical.

Finished 2nd Powder Mage last night and it did really take off in the 2nd half or really once Taneil got back up to speed - i hit my head and got my bell rung pretty good about 1/3 of the way through so wasn't really able to pick it up again until a few days ago.

Already about 100 pages into the 3rd one, going good so far.
