I never played the course before it was redesigned/renovated. I've heard some stories about how it was laid out, like 9 being a short dog leg par 4, but can't figure out what other changes were made from the original design.
Anyone know how the old course was laid out and/or why the changes were made?

#5 was a par 4 or maybe a short par 5 across the ditch. The tee was closer to #4 green and #5 green was near #6 tee.
#6 tee was moved up I think but can't really remember where it was.
This was 25 years ago when I played it originally so my not be completely accurate.

You might be off by a hole, not sure. There are no par 5's.
#4 is the hole where you tee off over the railroad track and the green is down hill down by the lake.
Then you had to walk a short distance to #5 tee box, which is the one where you had to hit across the canal to the fairway, which ran parallel to Dalrymple Dr. I think they have turned this into a par 3 and the green is now in the landing area just across the canal.
#6 tee box was right next to #5 green and you teed off over the canal again. The hole also ran parallel to the canal, just on opposite side.
#7 was the hole with the elevated teebox that was a dogleg left with tons of trees.
#8 is the par-3 with the blind tee shot
#9 was the dogleg right par 4.
I haven't played the course in 30 years, but I remember it like it was yesterday. It's where I first learned to play the game. The course is perfect for young kids and older folks who don't hit 'em as far as they used to. One day I am going to go out there and play it again, just for old times sake. I've driven by it a million times and it always looks good and well maintained from the road.

#9 green may be a new green. Think I remember that green being farther up the hill. The tees for #9 green were just to the side of #8 green. You can still see where it was. Mounding was added between 8 and 9 holes also.

I always thought #5 was the hardest hole in Baton Rouge because the trees protected the greens so you had to lay up over the ditch. That would leave a long second shot. I was just starting out playing golf and had a bad slice. Except on that hole, straight and on to Dalrymple Dr.

5 was very difficult. A drive had to be perfect to get a short shot to the tiny green. You could use a five iron off the tee, but you had another five iron to a postage stamp green with two mounds on it.
Really three, four, five, six, seven and eight were tough given the conditions and the equipment of the times.
Nine was very short, but the tee box was screened by large bushes and it prevented a drive to the green. The big hills made it fun.

I can't figure out the line on 7. I've debater laying up off the tee, but I don't want. 5i into that green

7 has been a bitch for as long as I've played the game. The green is about as big as my bedroom with water on the left and long and OB right. That's assuming a tee shot on the proper line, which is difficult enough.

I always go under the clump of trees and bank it off of the last tree by the fw for optimal lay up conditions... All on accident, of course.

3 wood over the wooden post in the fairway at the top of the hill, ideally landing right of the tree at the bottom of the hill

I’ve played city pro a few times with just 8 iron wedge putter. Get the 8 iron to stop at theropod the hill. Hit a low runner towards the cart path. If it’s dry it can run forever and sometimes roll on.

The drive on #5 was impossible. The landing area was always hard as a rock. Put many a ball onto Dalrymple.

The perfect play was a power fade running down the center of the fairway leaving a PW or a 9 to the tiny green.
If you hit it too straight you were in the street and if you cut it too much you were under the large oaks on the right of the skinny fairway. It was a brutal hole back in the day.

That was a jacked up hole as well. Who has ever heard of a par 3 where you can't see the flag/green!?

212 or so yards, up hill about 20 feet with a deep swale in front of the green. OB (RR tracks) on the right. Brutal hole.

If they got the greens rolling as smooth as Beaver Creek or Santa Maria, it would be a legit option for golf. It makes you hit a lot of different shots, it isn't super easy or overly difficult. It plays quick, it's an easy walk, and it's in a great spot.
Putting out there has gotten better recently, but it's still super slow compared to the nicer courses. They have decent fairways, etc. Strategically, I find it to be a really fun course.

I have a blast every time I play. I’ll normally take just 6 clubs of some combination. A few times played with three and that was fun.

Driver, 5i, 8i, 9i, pw, 56, 60 and putter. 3 balls.
It's like you aren't even carrying clubs at that point
