Anyone ever do a long decoy string in deep water? Like for divers

I was thinking anchor on end, tie the rest together and pull back to the boat to keep the line tight.

Or maybe just really long leaders on each is better?

How deep? I used to use a jerk rig. If I recall correctly, the anchor portion could probably go six to ten feet deep. You could extend that by adding additional bungee-type cord to the anchor end. I found that the jerk rig was more hassle than this solo hunter likes to deal with. Strings -- and therefore tangles -- everywhere. That said, it has its place.

Thanks. About 15-20’ deep. We will be doing layout boats in a lake.

When the river is up it’s 15’-25’ deep where I’m hunting. Have a couple dozen decoys rigged up for it. They have about 30’ of string on them. Unwrap from keel until the weight hits the bottom, dally off and hunt. Wrap them back up and put them in the sack afterwards

Yeah that's how you do it. Have a handful of these strings splayed out at different angles coming towards your setup. Not uncommon at all for them to land well outside of your dekes and swim in.

I'd have your furthest outside decoys be drake scaup, pintail or canada geese. Something with large white patches that are very visible.

Similar to this. But even in a straight line paralleling each other, it'll probably work.

I've generally found divers to be far more suspicious of my presence than they were of the decoy configuration. Keep yourself low and still.

Yeah, kept the string on spools then clipped the decoys as we put them out. Anchored with a 32 oz container filled with crete. Don't think system was all that great, we'd leave dekes on and try and stack them and they always got tangled. Hunting deep water sucks one way or another.

One option is the decoy raft from southern flyaway outfitters. Pricey, but might fit your needs.

I run 15’ lines in a gravel pit. I use individual rigs, Texas rigs. Fold the lines over and tie in a slip knot. I use 8 oz weights. Order them from gratefullead.com. I use Lifetime Decoy coated line with crimps. Heavy duty durable rigs.
