I’ve been hearing this phrase trotted out a lot recently. What exactly do football commentators mean when they say this?

Good angle on player position.

The ability to make the tackle, especially when being blocked.
Typically this is brought up when defensive ends, outside linebackers, and safeties take bad angles and get caught inside the play and are either blocked out of the play, or just run outside of.

Inside/outside leverage means where you line up vs the offensive player you're going against. It tips the offense to where you think you'll have help.

It could also be used for blocking. Doesn’t matter who’s bigger and stronger if I get underneath your pads I’m going to win.

It's also as mentioned above, lining up inside or outside of a wide receiver.

The announcers are usually talking about numbers in a set. So, a trips set should have 4 defenders to defend 3.
Otherwise, that set is out leveraged from an alignment standpoint.

Right now I don't have the bandwidth but I'll reach out to you after the game so we can get our ducks in a row on this topic.

I don't hear it in this context often, but I could see it.

True. For LSU football fans it’s about Jordan Jefferson using the compromising photos of Les Miles to avoid being replaced as the starting QB.

As jerry Seinfeld said, "Men love leverage. They want all they can get."

As people said, lots of uses, most common I’ve seen is an end having outside leverage on a tackle or tight end, keeping the play inside of him and not allowing the end or tackle to move him wider.
