The 1957 Gibson Les Paul that Duane Allman, Southern rock’s greatest guitarist, is said to have played on early Allman Brothers Band albums as well as “Layla” by Derek & The Dominoes, recently sold for $1.25 million.
In July, the early ’60s Gibson SG guitar Allman played on landmark 1971 live LP “At Fillmore East” netted $591,000, as part of an auction of instruments most recently owned by folk-rock star Graham Nash.

Wow. I checked the RS guitarists ranking link in that article. I had thought Duane was ranked higher than 9 when I read it years back.

You know, you read an article about Duane's Gold Top, and you knew the guy that he got it from and played some with somebody else mentioned in the article, it makes you feel pretty good..until you realize that you aint seen any of those folks in about 40 years.

No....southern rock's best slide? Yes but not overall best.

Even money that it will eventually come out that the guitar was bought by Jim Irsay.

I think he transcends “southern rock” and ranks high overall. He was a well-respected
and coveted session guy.

I'm curious who you think is better.

+1
Not only is he likely southern rocks greatest he is likely top 5-10 all time. When you look at his body of work in such a short time he was truly an amazing and talented musician. The more I listen to him over the last 30 years the more and more I think he was one of the best ever. Of course it's music a beauty of it is everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
