Founding Father (Rediscovering George Washington) by Richard Brookhiser
American Sphinx (The Character of Thomas Jefferson) by Joseph Ellis
Benjamin Franklin (An American Life) by Walter Isaacson

I going to start some binge reading for the time period 1700's through post-World War 2...

Let me know if any of you have read the books above...thanks

1776 first, then Founding Father, and Benjamin Franklin last. JMO. Haven't read American Sphinx.

McCollough is an excellent writer. If you like his style, check his Truman biography.

The problem with 1776 is that he didn’t then write 1777, 78, 79, etc.

I've read Founding Father & American Sphinx years back. Both good, I recall liking 'American Sphinx better.

An even better book by Ellis is Founding Brothers. Great book on early American history told through the relationships between founding fathers. Won a Pulitzer in 2001. There's a chapter on 'The Duel', a chapter on Adams-Jefferson & other episodes.

ok. I just finished 1776. It's a slow read and my busy schedule made it take longer than I wanted. But the book provides fantastic insight into the war, and how fortuitous we were to win (or not lose the war in 1776). But I agree with your post. I was longing to get this same level of detail for the following years, since the war didn't officially end until 1783.
