Boston airfare question

Looking to get the family to Boston later this Summer. Prefer to fly out of Lafayette or Lake Charles but not seeing what I feel are reasonable travel times or prices. Any chance (other than I’m an idiot) something gives and prices drop to nearly half of what they currently are? For 4 of us I’m seeing $3,900ish currently...

Never heard of it.
But seriously, you're flying out of small airports and trying to go around peak season, so it's not going to be cheap. But that does seem ridiculously high. If you're looking at Lake Charles, can you not make the drive to Houston? You'd save a fortune.
Hopefully CuseTiger jumps in here and can help you out.

4 1/2 hours to Houston 3 1/2 to NOLA. I can do either but don’t want to.

Its around $350 each from NOLA so you would be saving a big chunk of money.

No kidding. It kills me to see that sort of price for trips to Chicago last year, Orlando earlier this year, and DC 2 years ago and now Boston is triple that.

What month, weekends, times are you looking for? Cheapest I'm seeing out of Lake Chuck to Boston is $300/person, total would be $1200 for four. LINK
Lafeyette is $322/person on American or Delta. LINK
Seems like you've got a lot of options, where were you looking at $3900 for four???
Also try looking for two one-ways, thursday nights and sundays are usually more expensive while saturdays and tuesdays/wednesdays are cheaper

Whew. Thank you for doing that math for us. My brain is fried from reading the directions on how to microwave popcorn earlier today.

This is the part where I’m an idiot...
The departure flight is after 4pm arriving in BOS at close to midnight. The latest I prefer to arrive is 9-10
I see another departure from LCH around noon but they all seem to have huge layovers turning what should be a 6-7 hour trip into 12-13 hours and arriving all super late.
I love the afternoon departure both coming and going.
Am I just being too picky?

Yes.
If you want cheaper flights and more time options, go to a major airport. If you want convenience, go to Lake Charles or Lafayette but it’ll cost more and you’ll have fewer flight options.

Thank you for the clarity.

Jet Blue was a winner for me.

Drive to Nola, JetBlue and Spirit have DIRECT flights. You aren’t getting a direct from either of those. It will save you time and money. HOUSTON should have directs too. I know the drive is longer but a direct flight makes up for it.

I understand your point here, but in the OP's case, this (likely) isn't the best idea. I took a random Thursday-Tuesday trip in July and compared. He can leave from LFT on Delta connecting through ATL with a total travel time of 5.5 hours for $429.
Or he can fly on JetBlue for $349 with a total travel time of 3.5 hours non-stop.
Let's say he's a hour from LFT vs. the 3.5 from MSY. That 2.5 hour drive time difference to MSY is negated. He can also arrive at LFT ~1 hour before the flight vs. 1.5-2 hours at MSY.
The trip to MSY will take them more time.

True, my comment was more on his flights being almost $1000 each.
