Repairing a macbook air DIY

So the SSD in my gf's macbook air, about 4 years old, bit the dust last night. Tried the recovery tool and it couldn't find the drive. Today she took it into the apple store and they said the drive was toast, and also her battery is near failure.
They quoted her almost $500 to replace HD, battery, and reinstall OS. I've swapped out parts on a windows machine before, changed a couple iphone screens, but never opened up a mac laptop. What are the major pitfalls to doing this myself? Any good resources besides youtube? TIA

Should be pretty easy.
Most Mac parts are sautered in now but hard drive and battery should be replaceable still

I changed the battery in my MacBook yesterday for $80. Not sure about the SSD. It was very simple. Took about 5 minutes. The battery I used came with the 2 screwdrivers I needed.

I have a old MBP from like 2012 or so that I was going to try to Rejuvenate with some parts from crucial.com. I have not opened it up but the parts are there for a decent price it seems.

Hard drive is easy. Reinstall of OS is very easy.
Put in the new drive and boot to the recovery console - it will download the OS install over the internet and do the install.

This is the plan, the internet recovery tool was working without a drive present. Just gonna do a fresh install. Battery looks like a piece of cake and covers a wide range of models.
Just FYI for anyone else looking at this though, swapping the harddrive is simple but getting a compatible drive takes a little work. From the best I can tell in the macbook air apple used a proprietary interface that's not typical PCIe, SATA, or M.2, so the drive is a little hard to find and more pricey. If anyone can debunk this I'm all ears, as it doubles the price of the drive.

Yeah, Apple being Apple, the drives are special. We always just use the OWC kits (otherworldcomputing.) A little pricey but guaranteed compatibility.
Side note, I'm still rocking my 2012 MBP because the current versions have everything soldered in. No user replaceable HDs as far as I'm aware.

I'm having an OWC drive and a battery delivered today, so that takes care of the hardware issues, but it looks like re-installing the OS might be a hassle.
Creating a bootable usb of the OS from a windows machine takes third party software and you still have to find a non-sketchy image of the OS. When I use internet recovery the mac wants to install the version of the OS that it came with, but the replacement drives claim they are only compatible with current gen OS.
