I've stayed in Newport a couple times for work. Don't know a ton about the area, but a few recommendations:

- Sit on the patio at Alta Coffee for breakfast and coffee.
- Sancho's Tacos for a quick bite. Snug place, but cool joint.
- Dory Deli has a good burger and sandwich menu. Another spot for quick bite.
- Bluewater Grill had good seafood. Nice patio.
- Looks like Newport Beach Brewing closed near the end of last year, but sounds like a new concept will be opened by summertime, which is good because the beer sucked. Keep an eye out.
- There's a nice Oceanfront walkway and you get nice view of houses that line the beach. Very cool architecture.
- Nothing special about the pier, but it's close to some bars and restaurants.

Drive down the coast to Laguna Beach and spend some time there.

Balboa Island is a cool little side trip. You can rent boats, hit the beach, walk on the boardwalk and just check out the whole Island.

Mama D’s for a great pink sauce, great service, great food in general.
San Shi Go (I think I got that right) for a very good sushi experience.
