Going camping in North Carolina next week with some friends. Any advice on some of the best camping spots? Location is not very important, willing to drive anywhere in the mountains. Also, planning on rafting on the Nantahala.
Also, best local food in the area recommended?
ETA: Tent camping, no RV bullshite

I enjoyed the area about 45 minutes SW of Asheville.
Mt. Pisgah cg and Sunburst cg look like they'd do the trick.
Good 5,000 ft hiking near Sunburst. Very close to the Parkway.

No suggestions, but I'd stay away from the App Trail, for camping. There is probably a bubble of "through hikers" making their attempts

last time and every time I've went just follow the river up the road from the put in "the delayed harvest section" of river. Follow that road for a bit and there will be a road to the right you pull off on. There are some beautiful campsites along the river there. Basically just pass the put in and keep on going. The road you will be looking for is Old River Road.

I'm a big fan of Pisgah.
And rafting the Nantahala is well worth it.

Out past the Ocoees.
Basically anywhere in the Nantahala.
Around Wayah Bald
Best food in the area is Caffe REL in Franklin, NC. Don’t let being in a gas station fool you.
If you want neverending southern food, checkout Dillard House in Dillard, GA.

There’s a ton of good ideas in here so far.
Just want to add that I recently flew a little single engine back n forth between Atlanta and Knoxville, about 3 or 4 times one week.
Flew right over Fontana Lake, Lake Santeetlah, Hiwassee Lake, Chatuge Lake, Nantahala Lake, Nottely Lake, and the Little Tennessee River. They all looked really nice from above and like they might have good camping spots.
I noticed there were a few really cool dams below too.
Also saw a tiny airport on the map up in Andrews/Valleytown NC, they may have some restaurants or something if ya ever need supplies
I’d like to get up there soon myself.
Hope yall have a good time.

ORV Maps of Cherokee National Forest
This is a good one - Stratton BaLd to Robbinsville NC
If you can find a copy of ORV Map of Cherokee National Forest (found in FS Offices) get it and hold onto forever! ETA: this one. and the reason for listing these are you'll find primitive sites all over the place once you get started. The NF is chock full of little paved and gravel roads with authorized (marked) campsites. Just bring everything you need!

The area around Pilot Knob Mountain and Hanging Rock State Park is nice. It's north of Statesville almost to Virginia. It is south of Mt. Airy.

That water is released from the bottom of the dam and is VERY cold. I was just there kayaking yesterday and it's a blast, just be prepared.
I'd recommend Turkey Creek Campground. It's close to NOC and far enough that you're not going to hear Bryson City at night.
Mortimer Campground is a great location if you want something more remote and a lot of hiking options.
Lastly, if you're looking for more adventurous rafting, I'd recommend the Pigeon, Ocoee or French Broad for more exciting trips. The water is also warmer at those locations which is a plus.
