What are you Gayle Benson or something. I don’t think YOU have a say in how it goes down!!!!

I thought he was considered one of the best before the ATL thing. He was working with us and involved in the Solomon Hill deal? Wasn’t aware of that and had thought he was considered a really great evaluator before his hawks thing.

I mean no one bats a thousand as an NBA GM.

And I think he was considered amongst the better GM's before the debacle.

Though I will say, again, simply as an objective observation, another consideration is he was also not the best drafter.

Pretty much every season there were guys right around his spots as BPA that he should of selected over his eventual pick. So it's not really simply reaching to knock him for not picking a guy half the league passed up.

For instance picking Schroeder and Larkin back to back over over Dieng, Snell, Roberson, Plumlee, or Gobert. All players that went basically right after their selections. Shroeder is borderline depending on how you grade their value, still.

Then taking Adrien Payne over Jusuf Nurkic a pick later the following season.

Trump wouldn't like you saying that about one of Jared's good friends.

Misses in the mid to late first round are a little more forgivable.

Ainge has missed in that range.

Missing in the lottery kills you.(Kahn)

Ferry as POBO can oversee everything. Bargain Free Agents, draft steals, rookie contract guys who need a change of scenery.

Right now I’m heavily for keeping Ferry in that role and hiring a GM like a Battier type.

Also, Ferry can oversee GLeague front office.

As someone else mentioned I would be fine with Ferry remaining as part of the staff (GM even if the new hire is installed as POBO) but not as the primary head of basketball operations.

why not president?
would you feel that way if he hadn’t read that scouts report in a team meeting?
what do you know about the track record of less prominent candidates that is/are objectively better than that of ferry?

he built a good team in CLE
he built a 60 win team in ATL

Ainge was a notoriously poor drafter up until a few seasons ago after they overhauled their scouting.

So that isn't inclining me to give Ferry a pass on his frankly poor draft performance over the years.

And since that is where our focus is going to be by necessity, having a track record of success and/or a track record of establishing a successful scouting department is absolutely crucial imo.

I like Ferry but I see no reason to be married to him this early in the process.

Because Ferry as an internal hire will not have the leverage to truly change the org. He won’t have it to spend massive on non revenue generators.

An outside hire could demand it.

I’m not sure I agree with that.

Ferry has never been captain of the ship here.

Running the overall operation and bringing a GM like Battier or Zarren. Continuity and Change at the same time.

You can disagree all you want. An internal hire will never have the leverage an external hire can demand.

what I am saying is a guy like ferry has skins in the wall that others like zarren do not.
I’m confused by the “ferry as GM with a POBO” opinion

ferry is qualified to run the team
a guy like zarren may be or not...we don’t know

What Fun Bunch is saying is that he doesn't trust this organization to do the right thing over the easy thing. Hiring Ferry doesn't actually signal change unless with announcing him as POBO they also make other announcements of strong moves to upgrade the organization's infrastructure. For instance when Demps was hired there were several high profile executive hires like Connely and Madkins.

If we see Ferry POBO + Langdon GM + a highly regarded person to head an expanded analytics department and some announcement about upgrades and investments in Medical Science, then a Ferry hire might be worth getting excited over. But just saying "after an extensive search we're hiring Danny Ferry as our POBO/GM" would be disappointing. It still might be an upgrade over Demps, but isn't as far as they need to go.

I have been pumping Zarren as POBO and Ferry as his daily driver GM
