I’m looking for an odd vacation.

I want to travel out west for about a week. I have some things I want

1. I want to be able to go on daybhikes
2, I want to spend st least a couple days in s lodge or cabin where I can work on writing
3. I can spend the rest at cheaper lodging as long as close to objective

I’ve been thinking Utah, Montana, or Wyoming

We took a trip similar a few years ago;

Started in Nola, went west to Death Valley (stopping at Carlsbad, Roswell, Vegas to stay at RedRock and Death Valley) then looped back east and hit arches, canyon lands and Bryce Canyon. Slept in the back of my Jeep on an air matress for 3 weeks. It was freezing, cramped and memories we would never want to forget. Our west is beautiful man and we had a blast.

We had more trip planned but wife fell and broke her leg in Bryce so we had to fly back home for emergency surgery.

Edit: lots of day hikes along that route. We also hit the Grand Canyon as well

Spring or summer.

If spring or early summer I would stick to Utah. Montana and Wyoming(parts worth going to) will either still be buried in snow or it will be mud season.

In Utah you can go from Arches down to Zion and hike until your hearts content. Unsure about cabins and shite because I sleep in tents.

Go to Idaho, Eastern Oregon, North Cascades.

Less crowds, incredible scenery

If you do Utah, consider Page, AZ (which is right by southern border of Utah) for a daytrip.

Just got back from there....awesome

If hiking, nature, isolation, and writing inspirations are on the agenda, I recommend the cabins at Ross Lake Resort in the North Cascades Mountain Range and the hikes around it incl. to Desolation Peak. Brother in law did the latter and loved it.

Utah: Moab is a nice hub for Arches, Canyonlands, the La Sal Mtns, and more MTB and running trails than you can cover in a week. A little pricey. Read Desert Solitaire before you go.

Wyoming: Pinedale is a pretty small town at the base of the Wind River Range. Lower costs, less trendy, and better mountains than the more popular neighbor to the west.

Montana: No idea, only driven through and stayed in Missoula a night. Big Sky has a nice resort and one of the best Ultras in the country (The Rut) so I imagine the hiking is solid. And Yellowstone is a short drive for a day trip.

And of course Glacier has incredible hiking and scenery, several cool small towns to pick from.

If you are open to other states a few posters recommended the North Cascades in WA. I would research some of their suggestions.

For the most beauty with the least crowds look into Idaho. Sawtooths.

April, May and early June are generally melt months and not the most enjoyable time to visit unless you aren’t opposed to postholing along certain areas of trails. I recommend going somewhere dry, like eastern Oregon. The Wallowas are gorgeous and there are some dry canyons that are great to backpack. I’m actually planning a short weekender to the Joseph area in April. You can also consider the Owyhee Canyonlands and the Steens.

Are you driving, or flying and renting a car? That will determine how remote you are gonna get into certain regions without a large airport.
