The Shelby Foote Trilogy. It is long and can be a bit dry at times, but is the best overall story of the war ever written.

Historical Fiction by the Michael (Killer Angels) and Jeff (everything else) Shaara
Killer Angels (Gettysburg)
Gods & Generals (Start of War through Chancellorsville)
Last Full Measure (post Gettysburg to Appomattox)
The Smoke at Dawn (Shiloh)
A Chain of Thunder (Vicksburg)
A Blaze of Glory (Chattanooga)
The Fateful Lightning (Sherman's March)

Memoirs/Diaries
Company Aytch, Sam Watkins (served in the 1st Tennessee Infantry, CSA)
Mary Chesnut's Civil War, Mary Boykin Chesnut with annotations by C. Vann Woodward (view from the wife of a Confederate officer)

Regimental Histories
A Scythe of Fire (8th Georgia Infantry)
Joe Brown's Army (1st & 2nd Georgia State Line Infantries)
Cobb's Legion Cavalry

Shelby Foote trilogy

Takes awhile to get through but it is well worth it for the facts. Nothing tops it.

I agree with The Killer Angels recommendation. I've heard great things about the Foote trilogy as well, but I haven't had a chance to read them.

If you're looking for something non-fiction, Tony Horowitz's Confederates in the Attic is an interesting exploration of why we are still fascinated by the Civil War so many years later.

Rebel Yell - bio of Stonewall Jackson

William tecumsah Sherman by McDonough

Both recent and both great.

Obviously Battle Cry of Freedom if the Foote history is too intimidating.

And if you want something ridiculous: all of Turtledove’s books

Shelby Foote put out some books on the Civil War and he also contributed with a lot of historical insight in Ken Burns "Civil War" documentary that was on PBS about 25 years ago now.

He was also a history professor if I recall correctly.

As mentioned, the Killer Angels series and Rebel Yell are both excellent. I also enjoyed Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Lincoln.
