Singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, a prolific tunesmith whose swamp-soaked 1968 pop hit “Polk Salad Annie,” reflected his Louisiana upbringing, died yesterday, Wednesday, October 24th, of natural causes at his home in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. He was 75.

Saw him several times in the '70's and '80's. I really liked him. Nice guy too. I was from Bastrop, next to Oak Grove. He was born and raised in Goodwill, La, about 8 miles east of Oak Grove, closer to Bastrop. His mother moved to Bastrop and died there years ago. I went by the house to give my condolences. It was a block from the paper mill. Tony Joe's sister's son married my 2nd cousin , that was my connection to them.

Nooooooooooooo ! Talk about an American original. His whole catalogue is criminally underrated. I am so sad to hear this. Man he had chops. Just a bad man.

RIP Tony Joe White.
You will be missed.

During his career he released 31 albums, and a dozen or so singles.

Here's a full Tony Joe White concert from Germany in 1992. The video is 58 minutes long. This is the best live recording of Tony I've ever heard.

The best Tony Joe White concerts were on Austin City Limits in the 80's. I recorded them on VCR back then. I have 2 of them, one was with a full horn band and a B-3 player, really good.

There's another one with just TJW, bass and drums. It's pretty good, too.

Yes,I saw that one too. I might have recorded it also. My VCR broke on me and I can/t play it right now. I called my cousin but got no answer on the phone. Her husband is TJW's sister's son. I guess he's his nephew. If anyone wants a copy of the Austin City Limits concerts, I might can get it copied. There's a record store here that does that for fees. My e-mail is pdginn@bellsouth.net.

I've been listening to many TJW songs via Youtube.

This is Tony Joe and Waylon. Hope you enjoy!

Deep voice, very unique. Limited range but he always made it work. Sad, sad news.
