Have you seen the hundreds of cases the last decade of people faking hate crimes?
The problem with this is most of the time these are fake and people like you NEVER come back and update the story or apologize.

Rumor is that he refused an official police investigation into the matter. He also got caught with fake/switched/stolen plates on some of his vehicles last year parked downtown. The signs are there for this being a publicity stunt. I will add that if this were true it would certainly be horrible someone would do this.
