So I went get fit for a driver at GolfTEC in BR yesterday, and seeing the lack of reviews on the place on here I thought I'd share my experiences.

To preface this, my current driver is a Nike VRs Covert Tour with 10.5 loft and a 65g regular flex shaft. I am an 18 handicap and at least 3-4 of these strokes are drives out of bounds. I've left the driver in the bag the last couple of rounds and had some low rounds in there, but it was tough walking up to long par 5s with an iron off the tee box, which I know isn't sustainable.

To start off he asked me a couple of questions about how I hit my driver - its been a huge slice for probably the past 6 months and I can't fix it - then they took my measurements and asked me to take a few swings with my current driver.

After 2 shots he stopped me and said he saw all he needed to see. Both shots were almost identical, high fade about 40 yards off center to the right that carried about 240. I told him that's pretty much the shot I've been hitting, his response was that my loft was way too high which created a ton of backspin - ~3800 rpm - and my shaft was way too flexible for my swing speed - 106-108 mph.

He put me in an 8.5 loft Rogue subzero with a Tensei CK Blue 78 X Flex. I hit a few and it immediately felt better than my current set up. Carry was 273 with 2550 rpm backspin. They were all draws that averaged 15 yards off target to the left. Much better than my current setup, but not $500 better, so we tried a couple more setups.

The next two were Mizuno JPX900 at 8.5 loft with the same shaft, and a Mizuno ST180 at 9.5 loft. The JPX was almost identical to the rogue in terms of carry, backspin and ball flight. The ST180 was kind of all over the place, but I had low spin rates at around 2200 rpm.

At the end of the session he showed me the stats and then started going over a few options with me, which was when he admitted that he didn't have many options for my swing speed. Instead of then giving me a sales pitch he gave me the build of my ideal club and showed me some clubs online a model year older that would fit my swing at half the price.

I left with a lot of info and was impressed with his knowledge. He gave me his card and told me to call or email if I needed any more help, and also told me that if I waited a month or so he was getting some new drivers in so he could sell me the older models for half off. I wasn't too impressed with the overall selection - he had Callaway Rogue and Epic, TaylorMade M3 and M4, Mizuno JPX and ST, and Ping G400 - but those are all good clubs so I'm not going to complain about that.

The only complaint I had was that he said he'd send all of the data to me, and when I got home and pulled up the email he sent me ONE swing with the ST180 that wasn't a particularly good swing at all. He said they just got a new software and he isn't sure why that happened but that he would look into it.

Overall it was a good experience, I was happy he gave me information rather than just try to sell a $500 driver to me.

TLDR; Good and informative - not a sales pitch. Not a huge selection but has high quality stuff. Worth the $100 to me. I'll give it a 3.5/5

Sorry, I meant to give you an upvote and hit the down vote button by mistake.
Thanks for all the info.
I'd love to get fitted like this , but honestly, I'm too embarrassed by my swing to have a pro view it!

So you only hit Callaway and Mizuno?

Could that have anything to do with the two "pros" being Callaway (Ryan) and Mizuno (Rob) staffers?

I hit a few with the TaylorMade M4 but it felt like crap and the software didn't track any of the shots so I have no data on what they were.

I assure you they've seen worse haha. And trust me, at 18 handicap mine certainly isn't a thing of beauty

What shaft was in it?

Full disclosure:

I've done golftec. It's fantastic for indoor practice and immediate video feedback both with lessons and practice. Once you get a basic understanding of your swing and what you need to work on, it's a great tool especially in the cold, wet winter months.

But their GC2 system is as bad as Edwin Watts so the numbers should be taken with a grain of salt. And you're still getting fit on a mat. I wouldn't buy anything until you at least went on a range or, preferable, demo it on a course (which, they've allowed me to do).

Overall, their fittings are better than EW but not nearly as good as with a pro with trakman preferably on a range (although Bebu who's the best has his indoors). And their model isn't in selling product but selling lessons and practice time. It's very expensive considering the lessons are just 30 minutes.

It was stiff, not X-Stiff, and a little lighter than the Tensei, but to be quite honest I don't remember what the actual shaft was.

He did tell me to go to EW and see what they had to demo, which I thought was weird, but he admitted earlier that everything he had for my swing speed was gonna run me $500 so I suppose he knew he wasn't going to sell me that. I'll see what I can get my hands on to test out.

I expected as much, but GolfTEC was pretty easy and convenient to book. I'll definitely take that advice and go to a pro for iron fittings though, which will probably be sometime early next year.

Same situation in Houston. I went to get fitted for irons. Paid $75 for the hour, gave me all the specs. Went online and got the same irons for 75% of the MSRP, had them bent to the lie and grips installed locally. Overall ~20% savings.
I do agree with Ell on an outdoor range/course being much more reliable. I've never been a trackman/stats player and prefer to test new clubs based on feel and visual on the course. Much better representation of the performance.

Recommended Titleist for my fitting, so probably not.

I had a great experience at Golftec when I got fitted last year.

Like you said, he wasn't pushy. He asked me what I wanted in the new driver and based on what showed up on the simulator picked out a few options. He picked Taylormade M2 and M3, Callaway Epic/SZ and let me pick those. He also suggested that I check the Titleist out, but he didn't have any for me to hit.

He told me that I spin the ball a lot off the tee, and that I should look for something with a lower spin rate, and that would increase distance and grant more consistency. The Epic SZ did that the best and thus gave me the best results.

I was very impressed with my experience. I probably could have gotten better at a specialty place or someone with a trackman, but I hit my driver really well and pleased with the results, so mission accomplished.

They didn’t even have Titleist clubs last time I was in there. Told me they weren’t getting enough kickback from sales on them.

Houston V BR, I guess.

I hit Callaway, Ping, Titliest, and Mizuno irons after getting baseline data from my old clubs.
