I'm not a veteran, so of course I've never been to the VA. I know several veterans who tell me that the care is turrible. Even tho it's free it sounds like it's worth what you pay for it. Is it working for you?

If time is money then I disagree.

I have a service connected disability and it's been a mixed bag for me. I've had experiences with people at the VA in Baton Rouge and New Orleans that made me wonder how they are still employed. But there are a lot that care about the Vets and care about providing world class service.

For most needs I prefer VA over other care options.

I have Tricare and Medicare and haven't paid out of pocket for anything for years other than a few prescriptions when I didn't get them from VA.

Depends what you want done and how convenient you want the service. VA in NO is pretty much outstanding with the New Hospital. If you search the internet you will see surveys that rate VA care higher than its competitors.

Why do you need to know then?

If OP's basing his choice whether or not to enter the service based on VA benefits, this isn't going to go well.

The Hammond clinic is pretty good... I never wait more than 5 minutes before any scheduled appointment. I have BCBS but I use the VA more now than I used to. With my BC insurance I have to pay a $25 copay and go pick up prescriptions at the pharmacy. With the VA I don't pay anything and they mail you prescriptions.

Not sure yet, but I'll find out soon enough. Just got offered 80% DOD disability and 90% VA disability during my medical evaluation board.

I think he's trying to talk shite because the vets go to "free medical care", although it's far from free.

It's not free. There are copays, besides, Vets earn it as part of their lack of pay.

You'll get free healthcare bc you're >50% service connected... but I get what you're saying. Is it really "free" if you ended up at least partially disabled bc of your military service.

It's probably hit or miss depending on each case. I am sure some people get great care and some get crappy care. I have dealt with veterans that rave about the care, and some that say it's the worst.

I have also talked to a veteran that drove from Baton Rouge to New Orleans for care, because he did not want to pay out of pocket for his emergency. He went to the General once when his heart rate was 180 and got stuck with a huge bill because his VA insurance didn't cover it. He was having a true medical emergency, but he had to go out of pocket because the General wasn't a VA hospital. The next time he had similar symptoms, he drove to New Orleans for care, even though he could have died on the way.

Well they put their life on the line for that care, so no it isn't worth what they pay for it. Veterans should receive much better care than they get.
