Got little man's new clubs in today

Found a set of clubs for my 6yo son at Dick's. Just came in today. Gonna hit the driving range this weekend to test them out. He had a US kids driver that his paw paw got him, but he outgrew it. He used to love to hammer that thing in the back yard. So I decided to get him really playing and start bringing him along to the course. I used to play regularly, but the last few years I've averaged about 2-3 rounds a year. That definitely needs to improve, and this is a great way for daddy babysitting days to get a lot more fun. It might be a struggle to get the post-spring T-ball swing out of him, but he's got pretty natural hand-eye coordination. Wish us both luck, and any tips to bring along a new kid is appreciated.

Suggestions: Unless he begs otherwise, play 9 holes or fewer when with him. Don't keep his score for a while; just acknowledge his occasional good shot. And most importantly, when you are at the range with him, make sure he is in your line of sight ( to your right if you're right handed). They tend not to be very safety conscious at that age. Grip, grip , grip, are the three most important things to teach. The sooner you get his hands on the club properly the better.

My 8yr old is a golfer. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the irons in that set are awful.
My advice is let him ask to practice and ask to play. Just kind of keep it in his eyesight so it’s top of mind. Golf is a great summer sport for kids.

Any good par 3 courses in your area? When I was a kid (8-12), my parents would drop me off at Bringhurst in the mornings during the summer and pick me up after work. Me and my buddies would stay out there all day playing little tournaments by ourselves. That's where I fell in love with the game. I recommend taking him to a par 3 course routinely, instead of making him try to bang out a 560 yard par 5.

I'm an Alex boy too, so I pretty much lived at either Bringhurst, Rapides, or at England AFB course in the summer. Man I miss those days. I wish there was a local Junior tour here in BR like we used to have in Cenla. US Kids is mostly Acadiana or New Orleans/Northshore. He's been to the range with me a few times the last few years, and I know playing a full round in this heat with him would be tough. I was going to try and get some twilight rounds in at BR City Park and use the Santa Maria range as much as possible after work or early mornings on the weekends. I was thinking about signing him up for a US Kids tourney in July, but depends how he responds the next 6 weeks.

He's 6, so if I can get 2 years out of him beating them to death, I'm good. Don't want to spend the big bucks just yet. Still a lot better than the heavy arse cut-off steel shafts that I learned on and the old wooden head driver too.

Sorry I said something that made everyone downvote. I actually know a lot of about kids clubs. It’s turned into a hobby, I refurbish and sell them online.
That Top flight set should be banned because the balance of the irons are so bad. Way too heavy for a 6yr old.

I doubt his little baw is going to hate the game because of his club selection. I also doubt the kiddo has any reference point to know anything about balancing his clubs. . . Your expert opinion is a little late and unsolicited. Just be happy the dude is spending time with his kid and getting him involved in the game.

Just bought a set for my 6 yr old, I thought about just cutting some my old clubs down for him but he’ll like the stand bag and the set.

I looked hard at the US Kids set, but was going to wait maybe 2 years before I pony up and extra $100 for that set, by then he may need a few extra clubs in the bag too. US kids make great clubs, just didn't want to break the bank on this first set that he'll outgrow pretty soon. It's kinda like buying shoes, don't buy more than one pair at a time, because you'll be buying more in a couple months anyway.

my son has same set. we'll play 5 or 6 holes sometimes nine, let him tee it up in the fairway from 75-150 out and we have a standing match play bet. I play as a par three and hes either a par 5 or 8 depending on the day.

Damn. I remember my first set when I was a kid. A set of Wilson’s and it had a spoon fairway wood.
