Basically, I'm going to be like Anthony Bourdain in a Parts Unknown episode. I have no idea what I'm getting into, but I've a friend and the opportunity presented itself, so Korea it is.

It's probably a long shot, but has anyone here had food experiences in Korea (or any other helpful info)? The biggest allure of the trip is to continuously graze on street food. Korea has to have great seafood.

Where are you going? If Seoul, than the Itaewon district is great for street/bar food, for seafood take the train to Busan. I was stationed in Kwang-Ju (beautiful city) you really can't lose, the food there is amazing.

Not sure how familiar you are with Korean food but here's a website with a bunch of Korean dishes that you might not have heard of, wish I would have it available when I was there, I missed out on a bunch of good food.

It's broken down into categories and easy to browse

There's no TV involved. I'll just be living his role.

Planing on landing in Seoul and then eventually making it down to Busan.

Thank you. Maangchi has good youtube instructional videos and a worthy cookbook.

An Asian food excursion has always been one of my culinary fantasies. I would have chosen Japan, Thailand or Vietnam over Korea, but again, the opportunity presents itself.

Thanks ruzil for the suggestions. I kimchi at home and have access to balut at my neighborhood Asian mart. Will be looking forward to plunging headfirst in the cuisine though. I'm licking my chops over the seafood bounty.

So do I, but there is a big difference between having access to it and actually eating that nasty, smelly fetus.

I thought it would be something absolutely repulsive, but I love duck and eggs so it was an immediate love.

Maybe not.

And that sure is some Mexican looking Koreans.

The street food is just ok. Get the dumpling soup, bbq, bulgogi.

Check out hooker hill near Itaewon. Will not disappoint.

My wife's boss went to visit his son in Seoul. While there they went to the big seafood market and ate at a restaurant upstairs. The son ordered the food, they brought out live/fresh seafood and you picked what you wanted. One of the items they picked was the octopus sushi. They basically chopped the tentacles of the live octopus into bite size pieces and then dressed them with oil, cilantro, parsley and other seasoning. They took video and the tentacles were moving on the plate and when they ate them, the suckers would try to attach to your tongue or palette if you didn't chew them as soon as you put them in your mouth.
