I would think that history would have to play some part though, right? Every job that I have interviewd for, was interested in my previous successes. In this case, it appears that history played zero part. Eliminating history, what exactly was Orgeron's selling point over the other hundreds of qualified coaches out there? I wonder the same about Ensminger. LSU is a pretty big time job, so I just thought that the qualifications might have have been more impressive.

Definitely made me hungry. If that is a product of Orgeron, then I have no further questions.

WAIT! What about Dinardo?

quote:without a doubt. It's a factor, a big one. But it can't stand alone. There are plenty of good coaches (not great, but good) that had some really shitty stints. It took some of those 'other moving parts' to let them show how good they were. And I'll admit, the opposite is true in some cases.
I would think that history would have to play some part though, right?
Future example: We'll see how Mullen does now that he has better facilities, richer recruiting grounds, a better 'brand', BUT probably a worse AD to work with.
Past example: Lou Holtz, SC vs. ND vs. Arky. Mack Brown, NC vs UT. Would there have been NC without the resources at ND and UT? Were they good coaches in great situations or great coaches in some not-so-good situations? It really does take some of both, or in the case of some coaches (*cough* Saban) alot of both.
quote:exact same thought.

Have you ever been a head coach before?
Answer) Yes
How did that go?
Answer) I coached at Ole Miss. I was their worst coach in the history of their sucky program.
Sounds good, your hired!!!
Anything but that.

first, take a good look at who is already on staff.
second, make sure no other person on planet earth would hire him.
finally, pay him 15 million

What about him?
Dinardo was hired in 1995. Any guesses what LSU's overall record was the previous 6 seasons?
25-41
6 straight LOSING SEASONS. We lose our fricking minds now if we crash out at 8-4!
And yes, Dinardo rolled in here with his career record of 20-26 at Vandy. Looking at that with today's eyes that's not a great move. The truth is we really WERE in a position to take what we could get at that point.
We haven't been that program for a LONG time now. From the hiring of Miles after Saban left in 2004 we have been in as good a position as ANY program in the country with respect to recruiting grounds, player talent, coaching salaries, venue, fan support, etc. We are no longer n a position to HAVE TO hire a man with a losing record because there are no more options available to us. That's a luxury our program has earned, and it pisses me off to see it thrown away so carelessly as if it makes no difference whatsoever who you hire and what their record was prior.
