I loved this game (Tournament Edition)as a kid. Mom used to reward me for making good grades, so this is what I got in spring 1995. Realistic players. Every team. Almost every star player. High flying dunks and plenty of special effects for it’s time. Tons of secret players if you knew the codes. The only thing I didn’t like was that Jordan wasn’t in the game. And you could only play O’neal if you had the code. Great narrator voice and menu music. You could injure your opponents to get the ball back. Players were on fire after 3 consecutive baskets. Good stuff.
Creator of game says he is working to get another edition of the game to be released possibly this year. Good stuff.

EA did a couple recent versions a few years ago. Heard they were pretty good too.

Yeah, I loved reading the video game magazines to find the codes. Now you don’t even need to go to the bookstore anymore. The awesome collection of special characters was remarkable. I remember maxing out the injury rating every game playing CPU and winning every game by 40 points.

I used to have the lite version on my mobile. But not as easy to play as on console.
There were later found out to be a select few arcade games with Jordan, but those were only given to Jordan himself and select others.

Here’s a nice backstory of the game. How fun would it have been to play on a Mortal Kombat court?

Loved this game, and College Jam on Saturn.

We broke it out on the Genesis during the election last year to prove to my kid that Hillary was on the game.

I whipped a lot of asses back in the day with Stockton and Malone. Top 5 sports game of all time imo.

No dispute from me. I stayed up many a late night playing this game. Did all the secret players have ????? ratings?

This is my favorite arcade game of all time. Damn--25 years?
I pumped so much money into that game.. We had intense 4-player games at the local hang out every day after school. Over the summers, I had a job at the local university. I'd bring $5 for lunch everyday. That was enough to get me a 6" Tuna from Subway, a can Dr Pepper, and 1 game of NBA Jam. I'd have a nickel left over. I'd get irate when my game went into overtime and I didn't have enough to play the extra period.
Once I was at an Adidas exhibit. NBA Jam TE had just been released, and they had it set up to play for free. I played for 6 hours and went undefeated. That had me convinced that I was the greatest NBA Jam player on the planet.
I was murderous with turning Computer Assistance off and playing with Air Morris. When I wasn't cheesing, playing with hidden characters, I killed with the Warriors. Hardaway/Mullin/Sprewell/Webber.
The game has a huge following. They should update and release this game on a yearly basis with updated rosters/hidden characters. I came across NBA Playgrounds the other day. I thought it was a new release and was searching the board for reviews when I came across this thread, hence the bump..

I just found that some guy is about to release a book on NBA Jam. Here's a link to the prologue and there's also a video in the comments showing that you could do Fatalities in early versions of Tournament Edition.
ETA: Check these tees out. LINK I just ordered the Sonics one.

I bought Playgrounds.
I grew up playing every NBA Jam version on consoles. Playgrounds just doesn't have that same feel, but is fun for 20-30 hours. And if you've got someone to play against regularly, you'd probably get more enjoyment out of it.
Playgrounds has too many cheese oppotunities built in.
