Probably worth adding just a bit of context for those unfamiliar with Maynard's history.
His mother, Judith Marie had an aneurysm when he was a boy leaving her paralyzed. She was a very faithful to her religion.
Judith by A Perfect Circle expresses his anger with god and how could she be so faithful to the same god who left her in that state.
Years later
10,000 Days album by Tool is a reference to how long his mom was paralyzed and suffering before she died.
Wings For Marie I & II on the album is him advocating for his mother to get her wings in heaven due to her unwavering devotion. It makes a distinction between her devotion even in the face of suffering vs the majority of the congregation.
Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy
Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choices hypocrites won't see
But enough about the collective Judas
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine
It goes on to advocate for her faith & devotion.
High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground
You were the light and the way that they'll only read about
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
You're going home
You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying
I have come home now
Fetch me the spirit
The son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my, wings

Yep, advocating for her, not her religion in and of itself.
It's fascinating how you can follow his thoughts from one band to the next, with each being a worthy and totally separate avenue for his expression.

If you read the MJK biography, there is more insight into his bitterness with the church. The book states at some point the church told him that his mother suffered her aneurysm because of something she did to displease God.
Of course that's not a teaching of the chuch (at least not one I've ever attended) but we all know people who believe in that manner. It seems like he was raised in a very fundamentalist church, and it's obvious it left quite a bad taste in his mouth, justifiable so if that is what he was told.

3/5 of Puscifer in that video....
When did Matt join on? Never realized he was with Maynard and Billy... Same for Jeff
Solid song though, nothing great, but good.

And its what makes his bands very, very interesting.
I am a Christian, and I find some of the surface level, literal meanings of a lot of their stuff a bit difficult...
But the musicianship and the depth of the lyrics are almost always interesting and enjoyable.

This doesn't even sound like the same band from the first two albums, and not in a good way. Sad because I was a huge fan.
Well in most ways it isn't the same band, so that's understandable.

Is it though? Billy writes pretty much all the music and Maynard writes the lyrics. They are the core of the band.

But those guys are 15+ years older. They aren't the same musicians they were - plus Paz's violin and Josh Freese drumming is sorely missed.
Iha's piano work marked a big shift in their sound, in my opinion.

There was an 10 year gap between Aenima and 10K days. Tool still sounded like the same band. Maybe that's not a good thing because I don't like 10K days.

The album isn't as good all the way through as Lateralus, but Vicarious-Jambi-The Pot-Rosetta-Right in Two all make it a pretty strong effort.

10k days gets a bad rap because it wad the album that followed Lateralus.

I liked Doomed when it was first released, still do. I did not like Disillusioned the first two times through. Later, especially after reading the lyrics it has grown on me. I enjoy it as a whole, but really appreciate the lyrics.
