Just asking a question, not making an argument at all. The SC folks aren't all sold on Helton although he's won the Pac 12 a couple of times and the Rose Bowl. His staff is not top notch and didn't improve Darnold's play but there is something to be said for consistency. If you keep churning coaches, no good coach will want to come. We had that problem before Carroll landed in our lap.

We were very lucky to have Saban. Too bad for us he had to scratch the nfl itch
he scratched more than just the NFL itch.....

In all honesty, and I don't know if this makes it better or worse lol, but saban wasn't as a good of a coach here as he was post NFL.

While this is true, Saban would have gotten better here even without the NFL experience. Saban had really just finished the foundation for the program when he left. He is one of the most focused and detailed leaders ever but his focus improved after he set aside his NFL ambitions.
As for the replacement candidates, Petrino was the presumed leader until the interview when he alienated Skip and the others. They knew he was a jerk but LSU would have won plenty with him until he would have inevitably stepped on his own penis.

At my age, I prefer to look forward, not back. Wish more would do the same.
