Can someone explain why there are primitive arm only time periods during deer season. A 35 whelen is basically a 30 06.

“Primitive season” in MS and LA is just a money grab. Makes you buy an extra license. There’s nothing primitive about it

Probably to get more people in the woods. Too many deer right now and not enough hunting.

Completely disagree. Only veteran hunters are likely to have a second gun that allows them to hunt the one week of “primitive”

Hell Mississippi is weapon of choice on private land during primitive. Only time you can’t use a rifle is during archery

Wish La would just go ahead and say you can hunt with any rifle as long as you have the license

I think I understand your point here...

I know many guys that own a 35 Whelen and they hunt with it all year long no matter what season it is.

While true that Primitive "season" only has 1 week before and 1 week after the Modern Firearms season on private lands, there are a ton of Primitive weeks/weekends and lottery hunts on public lands that many people enjoy throughout the year.

I bought my 35 Whelen just for those weekends with friends/family. I now find myself hunting with that gun instead of my bow when it's really cold/rainy or sometimes when i just want to sit in a comfy chair. I would rather hit one of the kids box blinds and be comfortable than sit in my bow stands and be cold and wet.

I bought a 35 for WMA “primitive” purposes. I actually love the gun and carry it when still hunting deer. When I hunt back home in Arkansas, it’s nice to see they still recognize the primitive hunt somewhat with smoke poles only. Although I think they should limit muzzleloader to Hawkins type only if they’re gonna classify as muzzleloader.

Arkansas has problems with where they place muzzleloader and kid hunts right in the middle of prime time bow hunting. But every state screws up archery season.

In my opinion the manufacturer’s lobby is behind the different deer hunting seasons. They give hunters an excuse to buy another weapon plus ammo. The state gets additional revenue for another license.

I shoot an old Lyman Plains Rifle...54 Cal...Patch and Ball. It's a killer and fun to shoot.
