I've heard several arguments both for and against paying college players, but when this factoid rolled up on my Twitter feed, all I could do was shake my head.

quote:

Power 5 programs are paying a combined $69.01 Million in buyouts this year alone...you could give every Power 5 football player around $10,000 with that money...Institutions of higher education are paying $69,010,000 to seven individuals for them to not work #crazy

Do you realize that due to Title IX if you pay 85 football players you also have to pay 85 female student-athletes the same ammount of money?

Aint gonna happen.

I do. That's the best argument against it.

Title IX's probably the most massive and obvious legal hurdle to overcome for these member institutions if they decide to do this, not to mention state and federal tax law will apply for the players' income and antitrust violations regarding wages as employees and federal immigration law concerning foreign athletes enrolling in schools, etc it's all a big clusterfrick that simply can't be solved unless laws are repealed or drastically altered at the legislative level. It's SO obvious why courts generally rule in favor of the NCAA and her member institutions in these cases, they're acutely aware of all the implications produced from such massive decisions and precedents. My solution: the NCAA needs to just chill out if a student-athlete receives an "impermissible benefit" or whatever and not impose draconian punishments, we all know it happens just chill it's really NBD.

It's not just the women. You have to pay everyone.

The NCAA will never do this, because they don't have to.

There is a very small percentage of players, mostly the elite football and basketball players, that are worth more than their scholarships and other benefits to the school.

The other 99 percent are worth less than their scholarships to the school.

So, all these people talking about "worth" and "market value" will be very disappointed with that model. Most athletes would end up owing the school.

As much as people criticize the whole concept of amateurism and how it's all bullshite when applied to the student-athletes, it really is a blessing to all parties involved: student-athletes don't have to pay taxes on their scholarships which covers the full cost of attendance, I even think they get some type of stipend for "laundry money" and in most cases are paid under the table so it isn't like they're living destitute and they know the risks with that and amateurism legally protects the NCAA and her schools from years of litigation and prosecution pertaining to antitrust law and Title IX. Paying student-athletes officially just won't work unless all these labor and civil rights laws are repealed and that sure as hell ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

This literally only pertains to football. Most doing other sports are only partial scholarships.

I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that college sports would cease to exist before the NCAA would pay players.

Student Athletes should not get paid. NFL needs a minor league.

It’s all about Title IX. The pay that belongs to the revenue generating athletes instead goes to paying the tuition for a bunch of (mostly female) athletes that don’t produce any revenue. It’s not “fair” but it’s not designed to be fair.
